Social Stud Reacts | Otto von Bismarck - The Iron Chancellor - Extra History - #4

Mini-bio: My name is Brady. I'm 24 years old and am a graduate student in history. I started this channel as something fun to do while I finish my schooling. My primary area of study ranges roughly from the American Revolution through the first sixty years of the 19th century. While I am a historian (with a B.A. in Liberal Arts), I am a very new historian. I am more of a learner than a teacher, so I use the react format to do a little bit of both. Also, flags are fun, and I like them very much... and video games... and maybe some other stuff. While my videos are not all history related, this channel has a serious social studies bend to it.

Bird Note: I have a bird, his name is Peridot (Peri for short). You may see him appear in some videos and not others. While he has quickly become the channel's mascot, he only appears in videos when he feels like it. I don't force him to come on camera, he just likes being around hoomans, and I am hooman. Also, understand that birds are a lot of work, so don't go out and get one impulsively just because mine appears behaved in my videos. Bird parenting is a full-time job.

"How do you not know when you've been shot?"

Adrenaline is one hell of a drug

Lichensteins independence is so funny, it declared independence in the war between austria and prussia and sent it's 80 man army to guard a mountain pass. Austria didn't care enough about Lichenstein to bother sending an army to deal with it, especially when they were being crushed by prussia. In fact, those 80 men didn't see a single bit of combat, and returned home with 1 extra person. While they were on guard, they met an Italian who wanted to go back with them and live in Lichenstein. So they went to declare their independence with 80 men and came back with 81. They also disbanded the army after that.

The human body wasn't designed to be penetrated by a rapid projectile. The nerves around a gunshot are nearly instantaneously made useless. Add that to adrenaline and the fact that you're likely in shock, it's no wonder people often don't know they've been shot.

10:27: To answer your question, is called adrenaline. One hormone of which Bismarck was surely not in short supply of. Plus, he had had many duels, so he was for sure used to keep his cool in a situation with gunfire.

I think I once read a story of a duelist being stabbed through the heart, only to then defeat (if not slay) his opponent shortly thereafter. The human body, especially in times of great stress, is capable of some seemingly impossible feats.

When Frederick VII of Denmark died he was the last legitimate male heir of the Oldenburg Family in Denmark, so they had to choose a cadet branch

Seriously dude, you’ve been pumping videos out faster than LTT, and yet still maintain that charisma that you are known for. Keep up the good work, but don’t overwork yourself! (Also, I would recommend checking out the Last Samurai by extra history if you liked Sengoku Jidai.
P.S. MACHINE GUN SAMURAI)

going on the Bismarck train, after this you should react to their series on the hunt for The Bismarck. A missive battleship of ww2 named after the Iron Chancellor himself.

There is an audio recording of Moltke, you can find on youtube. As far as we know, he is the only person born in the18th century being recorded.

2:29 You may be surprised to hear the Roman empire of all places did not have ANY succession rules for hundreds of years, only vague traditions.

Lichtenstein became independent because the von lichtensteins were crazy rich and bismark wanted to separate them a bit from the Hapsburgs

The king that died (King Frederik VII) was the last Danish King of the House of Oldenburg. His first marriage resulted in no children and his first wife sought a divorce, which he accepted. His second wife fell ill one year after their marriage, and three years after their marriage she travelled back home to Mecklenburg. Their marriage dissolved in 1846, five years after they were married, and this marriage, too, was childless. His third (and last) marriage was to a commoner, and therefore the children that came out of this marriage did not have succession rights to the throne. He ended up being succeeded by his father's Niece, whose husband became the King causing the Schleswig-Holstein crisis.

That is at least what I half remember from my history classes and random googling.

I've seen a couple of interviews of people who were shot and apparently you don't feel anything for a few minutes.

Hey Brady, one of "ze Germans" here :-) In case you are interested to casually learn a bit more about German history, there is a nice documentary series called "the Germans" which was produced by German public television. It has been translated into English and is available on youtube (in bad quality though). Each Episode is probably too long for a proper Youtube reaction, but maybe it's interesting for you to see. They have Episodes about influential figures of german history, including Bismark.

Greetings from Germany!

Adrenaline numbs pain. It's the same reason a person in a car crash might feel fine until the next morning.

Also, in Germany this German-Austrian War is often called "Bruderkrieg" (Brothers' War) or "Deutsch-Deutscher Krieg" (German-German War).

Hey, Brady, if you're into that region of the world, I'm currently reading a book that is really good titled "From Peoples Into Nations", by UC-Berkeley professor John Connelly. It's about the development of nationalism in East Central Europe(so Poland, the Balkans, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, etc.) Runs from the 1600s all the way to the present day(published in 2020 so very up-to-date)

Not knowing you were shot has something to do with nerve getting damaged or the fight and flight reaction that makes you feel no pain
