I was learning Chinese and one of the words we learned was Shang (it means on top or above). I said Shang as Shang's name and my teacher told me it was pronounced sh-ah-ng not sh-ay-ng. My teacher said that his name is pronounced like that because non-Chinese people automatically think sh-ay-ng is Chinese. It took a while to get used to.
