This is not exactly applicable for all situations.There are companies across the globe especially in India which provide Internships that demand full time work same as full time employees the only difference being that Interns are the people who the company would not be able to retain for more than a year or two. The Internship duration is ranging from 9 months to 1 year.

As a Career Coach in a US university, I would like to share some thoughts. You bring up a valid point about the longevity and continuity of experience a person can get as a full time employee vs intern. I hadn't thought of that and that makes complete sense.

If a student has a choice between an internship in their area vs NO internship (and NO job) take the internship.

Let's look at two applicants, one with a degree and 2 years full time work experience vs a person with a degree and 1 or 2 internships. Would that person with the 2 years full time work experience be the preferred applicant?

Possibly.

Could the student with the 2 internships and NO full time work be a stand out applicant?

Absolutely!

Why?

Because that student with 2 internships may have more transferrable skills or more than that that student knows how to market themselves better on their resume to get the interview AND presented themselves better in the interview than the person with 2 years full time work experience.

Sometimes it's not experience that gets the job but how well you market yourself AND how well you network.

If the person with 2 years full time work experience never got known for his/her/their work by others but the person with 2 internships did AND marketed themselves better- who may be more likely to get the job-

The person with the two internships, though their work experience may be less in total duration of time!!
