If you transfer crypto from hardware wallet to exchange and then sell it for USD. Are you to pay Tax on the whole value or on the profit?

I find it easier to just keep your bitcoin on exchange until you reach a million satoshis then send to a cold wallet. Doing it this way you dont have to worry about consolidating in the future. I learned the hard way. I know you shouldn't keep it on exchange but at least a million satoshis isnt worth a ton right now.
