MuddyBootz Allotment #186 - Sowing Sweetcorn, Beans and Main Crop Potatoes - Willow Tree Pruning

French and Runner beans all get sown. With the sweetcorn sowing I will be comparing traditional sowing against pre chitting the seed. The final main crop potatoes are planted in containers and a cropping of an invasive willow tree returns some nice rustic ploles which I will use to support the sweet peas. Stay safe, take care and Thank you NHS and all supporting staff.

Hello Nigel, just keep a eye on the willow canes as they will root down quite quickly, remove them as soon as you have finished with them. Like the zip bag method as you can see the seeds you are germinating and don't disturb them when removing the lid. Take care my friend and stay safe and healthy.

♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.

Have you ever used willow trimmings this way before? It’s my understanding they root very easily.

Looking good Nigel! I gave my plot up because my new job involves lots of travel for upto three weeks at a time, so I now get my allotment fix through your channel 👍

Hi Nigel Lovely video Sweetcorn what can i say I have now given up with it this year sowed 5 different lots and none have shown I sowed Cobra And Blue lake some weeks ago lovely plants but just this last 3 days something has got onto them some say it's powdery mildew but i know what that is like and there is no white coating on them this is like light brown but i stripped all the bad leaves of them and treated them but have now noticed it is all in the stems also but have now sowed another lot and see how they go i did see on a few sites someone has the same on their strawberry plants another has it on his broccoli so keep an eye out Take care Stay safe Pam ☕🍰

I always love your videos Nigel and Ive followed you advice and switched to incredible for my main crop but I’ve settled on chitting my sweet corn because I’ve had very variable germination and I don’t have enough seeds to risk failure this year. I find that provided you plant the sweet corn within 3 weeks of it breaking surface you don’t really need root trainers, which suits me as I only have enough for my beans! Also I believe that “beans fix nitrogen” is a myth in practice, it’s only true if you cut them back before they flower (like I do with field beans) otherwise the beans use up all the fixed nitrogen in flowering and growing the pods. : all the best - Steve

That was nice to watch. You are moving right along there. I bet those carrots 🥕 will look lovely! I hear Oxford university is beginning human trials on their vaccine, it sure would be nice to put an end to this!

Take care
Klaus

Great idea with mesh grid Nigel.
I know that you were only using the rotary sieve for compost but if you ever use it for soil then turn the bolts & nuts around so that the bolt heads are inside the drum. It saves many a jolted arm!! The other thing I do with mine is to place a few washers under the spindle where it passes through the drum. Same sifting, less jolting 😀
Great stuff mate!

Hi Nigel, you've really cheered me up. Just planted my sweetcorn - 32 to give me at least 24 - in exactly the same root trainers as you've used. It's going to be 'exciting' trying to get them in between the first crop of broad beans and some of the winter brassicas but I'm going to give it a try - who knows what sort of weather and season we're going to have after a weird March and April? We could be beggared by the end of August or we could have a prolonged 'Summer' 'til October! Nature and 'climate change' will no doubt inform us and teach us as we go along. Not had much success with the 'kitchen roll' method but glad that you have. I've had a 'miracle' with my parsnips! 0% germination on kitchen roll but 95% in the same deep root trainers. Keep 'em coming, dear bro'. Keep safe. - Paul

I am trying the Beefsteak and Cherry tomatoes ( blight resistant ) this year but the seeds are much smaller than the Chrimson Crush variety which have been very good and reliable croppers the last couple of seasons I have been growing them

Agree with Tim P below Nigel - beware using willow! They will be branching out and getting in the way within the month! I have bought Benchmaster this year after seeing your videos last year. If only we had shows to show them at! Enjoyed the episode as always, all the best Martin.

It is a busy time on the plot and you have done well as usual. I have saved my runner bean seeds from last year just getting the bed ready and will start sowing soon. Not only NHS need our support and they certainly do but I have been inspired by all those men and women in lockdown sowing scrubs clothing at home on their own sewing machines for their local hospitals. Hard times do bring out the best in people. Take care and be safe Mike

Hi Nigel, I like the grid for the carrots all I did with mine was work a grid out with a small cane and sow seeds where the drills crossed, as to the sweetcorn this year I chitted my seeds and got a very good result in fact the best for 2 or 3 years. All the best Wayne.

Hello mate. You've reminded me show my sweet corn I forgot about it. I like how you sow your carrots in the tanks. Do you thin them out when they come up if you sew 3 or 4 seeds per hole? Stay safe and look after yourself and the family. All the best Nic 👍 🥕🌽🥔🌱🦊
