007 would never get this big without Connery playing it at that time

He wasn't a Bond.
He was The James Bond.

He had it all. The voice, looks, confidence, presence, composure, magnetism, charisma, personality, and more. The acting skills as well. The great Alfred Hitchcock chose Connery for his Marnie movie in 1964.

He had the perfect combo of charm, looks, sophistication, toughness, class. Difficult to fake ALL those traits!

The iconic panther walk was something no one else after Connery had.

"He delivered milk and polished coffins for a living." Just goes to show, where you come from isn't nearly as important as where you're going.

In 1962 when I was seven years olds I experienced the coolest moment in all of filmdom. When James Bond (Sean Connery) introduces himself for the first time. Sitting at Baccarat table in between lighting a cigarette, he says Bond James Bond. As a seven-year-old that blew me away I had never heard anything that cool and still haven’t heard anything that cool

As I understand it Ian Fleming wasn't in favor of Connery as Bond as he considered him too "Blue collar." That is until he saw Connery in the rushes and realized immediately he was the man.
One thing that always impressed me about Connery's Bond was his ability to immediately turn from a friendly man with a great smile, great personality, and sense of humor into a cold-eyed cold-blooded killer who'd waste someone in a heartbeat and with no second thoughts. No actor playing Bond has done it so well since.

I met the lady who was secretary to the Broccoli’s (Producers of the Bond Films !), she said they had a few men they were considering for the role, but having difficulty with final decision. They asked their secretary & another woman who they leaned towards. Without hesitation they said Connery, he had the animal magnetism they didn’t feel from the others !

James Earl Jones called Sean Connery "THE VOICE". Considering the work of Jones, that's the ultimate compliment.

He was the best James Bond Ever
My late mum's favourite especially as she served him once and she said he was so polite and had a beautiful smile
She said she nearly fainted when he smiled at her

I grew up as a kid knowing mostly Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. As I got into my 40’s, I seem to find myself watching more of Sean Connery in the role plus all his other movies. He transcends more than just James Bond. What a great actor.

For me he played the role better than anyone....he was authentically the mix of rough, hard and smooth...and the role in theory would demanded all those characteristics..

I used to work for retired actress Diane Cilento, Connery's first wife. This was at her Karnak Theatre in far North Queensland, Australia. What a lovely person she was. I met her daughter as well. I worked for Diane until she passed away. I remember her telling us about their honeymoon and about how her and Sean dropped some LSD and went scuba diving off the Mexican coast...
Bet you didn't know about that...
