So how do you guys master your home studio productions? Do you do it yourself or use a mastering service/engineer?

I downloaded both versions of the mix & the extra 'punch' is incredible to my ears.
Loving your channel as you explain things in a clear & easy to understand way. Thank you Ian

The master is more how i like it too, a bit less midrange which put the vocal a bit to the back, just right in the balance of the song for my taste. More transparant also. I use Reference2 of Mastering the mix company, that also shows amongst others the compressionin the whole song, in realtime. You could try that one for demo. Its a great tool. I am convinced that a mastering studio will be the best solution, just what you say, another pair of ears, another Enviroment, speakers, and top quality gear. But as a hobby I always do the mastering myself and for friends.

I'm on the outside opinion on this, I preferred your mix over the master.
I thought the master sounded thinner, and whenever I see the waveforms in the track having very little peaks and looking like a solid bar, I believe it's been pushed too hard with compression. I also heard(on my Sony MDR-7506 headphones) what sounds like compression hiss, which drives me crazy.
Your mix had more dynamics and the waveforms look really good.
I still suck at mastering, and still learning about mixing, and I feel uncomfortable saying something negative about someone else's work(the master).
But in the end, it's all subjective and for what the client wants for the final product.

Great song btw, and as I said, I think your mix is fantastic!

Hmmm. As you said mastered file is bit open but to me in the master there is something which is causing pain in my ears.. I guess if you are mastering your song by yourself it will be as good for substantially less money. Sometimes outsourcing is not the best way...On the other hand as many listeners as many preferences...😎
