New immigration rules for EU citizens in the UK

From 1 January 2021, the UK has a new visa system for EU citizens who want to work, study or visit the UK. If you want to work in the UK, in most cases you need to be sponsored by a UK company to apply for work visa. If you start your course in 2021 you will need to apply for a student visa. If you want to simply visit the UK, you can come for up to 6 months without applying for a visa before you travel.

EU citizens and family members who were living in the UK before 31 December 2020 are covered by the EU Settlement Scheme They need to apply for settled or pre-settled status by 30 June 2021. If you apply before the deadline and obtain settled or pre-settled status, you will continue to be able to live, work or study in the UK as before.

The requirements of the EU Settlement Scheme are “residence based” which means you should get pre-settled or settled status even if you have not worked, have received benefits, or if you were a student and didn’t have health insurance.

Apply as soon as you can and before 30 June 2021. And don’t forget: if you get pre-settled status and want to stay in the UK permanently you will still have to apply for settled status in the future.
