Gardening under an Oak Tree

Native perennials are the best solution for this dry, shady shrub border that gets infested with acorns from the large water oak tree. Wondering what the purple plants are? That’s ‘Sparkling Burgundy’ Eucomis (pineapple lily)

My go to for shade ground cover is Packera aurea. Once you establish it the first season, there’s nothing to do after that. It spreads a little each year and stays green during the winter in my zone 6. It’s awesome!….for sun I use straight native strawberry. It spreads super fast and is extremely easy to pull if you need to.

Interested in how the Chelone does there. I think of it as like a lot of moisture... If you revisit that area please let us know.
Also, landscape plugs are so nice and easy to plant... I use a power drill and an auger for speed, but need to be careful around roots and rocks since it can torque your wrist if it catches on them. Enjoy the NC warmth... we've been cool up here in suburban NY

Great topic. That lysimachia lanceolata is a revelation, and I will definitely be planting some next year.

Everything that grows under live oak shade turns scrappy looking and nasty when leaves drop for 2 months straight. Hate their leather- leaves, could tile my roof with them.
