Honestly if I had to gig again, something 60 watts with a 12 inch speaker is perfect. That's more than loud enough for small venues (a good 30 watt seems big enough for some small places) and big places will usually have a sound guy with a PA so your amp will be miced

I got an original block letter last year from guitar center for $400. They said it wasn’t working, but the bozo who owned it before tried to mod it himself and ended up wrecking the speaker out jack. Two hours of work and a little deoxit in the pots, she’s like brand new again.

I got one out of a shop for $550 in upper Michigan. Slapped a 10 band EQ and It is amazing. I will never be getting rid of it.

If you want to go smaller, the other rebage is the invective with some Mansoor upgrades. One of the best amps I've ever played.

Another AMAZING amp head is the Bugera 1990 (British Bite). Internally, it's identical to a Marshall JCM 900. Check out The Tone King's shootout of the two. And you can find them used for $200-$350.

I had both the 6505 combo and amp with 4x12 a few years ago. They are the best amps I've ever owned and bands like Immortal, Emperor that I love used them.

I just picked up a second-hand Marshall Mode 4 hybrid amp. It’s tube preamp, solid-state power amp. They’ve retailed for around $700-1000 recently and the only one available on reverb is currently up for $1500, and I snagged mine for $500. If you can get a Mode 4, get it because they work great a low volumes, have a wide variety of sounds, and pair well with any speaker

It's true, I've had one for 13 years and still works perfectly. Don't believe the "swap speaker immediately" thing, it sounds awesome as it is. I just had to get fx loop modificated.
