I am italian and grew up being told what was in good taste. Ralph Lauren is NOT "Old Money"-- it's expensive, ready-made clothing. Lauren is brilliant at having collected objects that are his vision of old money-- and that's great. If you love his wares, buy them. In my experience, one finds a tailor-- and you buy cloth and s/he makes the jacket for you. This doesn't mean haute couture. In Italy we have many tailors and seamstresses who work on their own. The important thing is to have the piece made for you. It will cost less that a Ralph Lauren. You will not be paying for his stores.

You are NOT getting quality fabric from H&M or Zara.

I had class mates that came from families " with old money " they never flaunted their wealth or status, at various events they would dress " refined and appropriate to the event" what the class clown liked to refer to them as " quiet and conservatively boring " whereas she was LOUD, CRASS and at times extremely offensive
Classic is also TIMELESS

Old money is not the Ralph Lauren look. That is a fantasy of what old money SHOULD look like. (Grace Kelly was money, but not old, BTW). Old money does not care about clothes and fashion. Good quality, for sure, but pretty frumpy and shabby based on my experience and research.

I adore classic style. Maybe because I always went to private school and wore blazers as part of our uniform. I don’t feel dressed without one. Give me a lovely pair of tailored trousers, a mock turtleneck, a blazer, and a lovely structured handbag. If it’s in camel and black or navy and white, I’m in heaven. Top it with a double strand of pearls and pearl studs, preferably handed down in the family. Perfection.

Òld money does not mean boring neautrals. Jackie kennedy, grace kelly, a young princess di wore lot of bright reds and pinks. And they all screamed old money❤

As I’ve gotten older ( 67 ) my taste in clothes has changed. Definitely looking at more neutral colors. Thanks

Style is not geared to old or new money, there are different generations who choose to dress how they want. It’s more flashy and luxury items noawadays,

None of my 'old family' relations will wear Ralph Lauren or even Brooks Brothers (the latter has been a UK brand for a few decades now and for sometime they were placing the little Sheep on all the clothing). The Brits ruined Brooks Brothers for most of us with the garish logo (which should have stayed on an unseen interior label). We also do not like waste, so many of us will never spend thousands of dollars on a handbag. Quality we love but once clothing, bags and shoes become a massive marketing campaign directed toward the nouveau riche and in debt, upwardly mobile middle classes we move on to other brands to signal to each other. By the time everyone figures out that we are not wearing the brands they thought we were wearing, we had been relying more on our bespoke favorites for sometime instead. In Europe, many of the old families will wear the fashions of high-quality, Italian and French designers but they also will quickly turn away from those same designers if they start to market to the masses, and either cheapen the look and price, and conversely if they make their prices ridiculously expensive. We'll feel taken advantage of and perceive that the designers are showing ungratefulness for our earlier sponsorship that allowed them to become wealthy. Also, many of us wear the same hair style we had when we left college - now that will surprise people, I am sure!

(14:00) Pretty great way to sum up the difference: Old Money: classic and tailored vs Quiet Luxury: minimalist, understated looks. Both styles are made with high quality fabrics in neutral colors.
