He was forward looking. Building library, debates with scholars, publishing books, writing poems, conquering immense territories. Pretty successful monarch.

For some people who don't know, after 1453, Constantinople wasn't renamed to Istanbul but Konstantiniyye. Until 1930, Istanbul was an unofficial name of Konstantiniyye.

They might have been onto something, for the era at least, with the fratricide. Look at France and Britain's 100 years war. It literally started with a king divding his kingdom into 3 parts for his 3 sons. Or the War of the Roses, brother was killing brother and there was horrible civil wars that went on for almost half a century until Henry the 7th. I mean in the end the family members still died in Europe but so did many soliders and civilians caught in the cross fires of a really big family feud that had nothing to do with them. So if they had practiced the same in Europe it could have saved hundreds of thousands of other lives and the chaos that comes with civil war.

The best and most underrated ruler of his time.
If he had lived another ten years, Rome would have conquered too.
His son Bayezid was the opposite of him, turning his attention off science and art.
He was the brightest face of the Ottoman Dynasty .

He was official protector of Orthodox christians and he gave the Greek Orthodox Patriarch official protection verdict, which was honored by all the Ottoman dynasty till the end.

He was the first and probably the only Ottoman Sultan who commissioned a European painter, Bellini to have himself painted, as this was considered a sin at that time.

He liked to go out in disguise and chat with his people as a normal man, and this allowed him to have many great encounters and quotes and stories about him.

He was the only Ottoman Sultan who was sued by a Greek architect whose hand he had chopped of for stealing from his mosque construction (yes, he commissioned a non muslim greek architect to build a famous mosque for himself) and the muslim Ottoman judge asked the Sultan to stand up in his presence and found the Sultan guilty and if the architect didn't forgive the Sultan in return for a lifelong pension from Sultan's personal treasury, Sultan's hand had to be chopped off, too.

just a note: decimate means to reduce by one tenth. This was a punishment that would ruin or destroy a legion so people often use it to mean destroy but that is incorrect.

Taht 2. Mehmet'in elinden rızası olmadan alınmıyor. 2. Mehmet kendi babasına (2.Murat) tekrar tahta geçmesi için emir veriyor. İlk başta babası kabul etmiyor tekrar tahta geçmeyi daha sonra Sultan Mehmet babasına şunu diyor : "Eğer sultansan gel ve tekrar tahta geç, eğer sultan ben isem tekrar tahta geçmeni sana emrediyorum." Bununla birlikte "divan" toplanlatıları yapılıyor ve 2. Murat tekrar padişah oluyor. Ondan sonrasını biliyoruz zaten bi süre sonra 2. Mehmet tekrar tahta geliyor...

I think you don't really give him justice for the way he conquered Constantinople. No one had sacked the city until he did it. And the way he did it by having his men carry the ships over land and into the harbor to bypass the huge chain protecting the harbor was ingenious.

It was a brutal time in history and he was an imaginative leader.
