Researchers say ultra-processed foods that are high in fats, starches, sugars and additives now make up 73% of the U.S. food supply, even though they are linked to health issues like diabetes, obesity, cancer and depression. Scientists say these foods should be regulated with tobacco-style warnings and advertising bans. Trish Cotter, global lead for the Food Policy Program at Vital Strategies, joined CBS News to discuss ultra-processed foods.

Instead of warning labels how about just getting these ingredients banned like in other countries.

These warnings and bans should have come a long time ago.

If they actually cared they’d first stop subsidizing corn syrup and they’d ban the pesticides Europe bans, just for a start.

My thought is… if it is so unhealthy it should not be manufactured in the first place.

Ban it. Force companies to change the food we eat. That would be amazing.

The veggies and fruits sections in grocery markets should be much larger and unprocessed food should be much CHEAPER not more expensive than junk food.

73% of the food supply is shocking numbers! No wonder it's hard, or nearly impossible, to have a healthy diet.

It's sick how money rules. This shouldn't even be a debate... feeding people poison for profit is wrong.

Cutting way back on ultra-processed/fast food is one of the best things I ever did for my depression. In retrospect, my worst episodes coincided with when I ate that junk for most of my meals. Since I started making a lot more of my own food from fresh ingredients, I've improved my mood, lost weight, lowered my blood pressure, saved money and found joy in cooking as a hobby. A healthier diet requires more time but is worth it as an investment in yourself.

This should be grounds for class action lawsuits.

Those foods are cheaper than the whole foods we SHOULD be eating. Make whole foods affordable!!!

Food and health companiies blame the consumer, that they should eat in "moderation." Meanwhile, those same food companies formulate the food to be as addicting as possible. It's shameful.
