I was adhd before they had adhd. My medicine was whippings, but after I became an adult and served in the navy, i was allowed to become a police officer, then as a detective conducting interviews and interrogations . I could hop down every rabbit hole a criminal wanted to go down and still keep my eye on the confessions. It helped me with victims who couldn't communicate clearly or had a hard time describing things. It helped me communicate with foreign nations because I could see what they were trying to say when it was difficult for them to display English. I could see things criminals were doing because i could see outside the box and not just what we commonly saw to draw conclusions. Criminals dont operate the way rstional people think. ADHD helped me ve as random as they were to catch them.

It’s neither good nor bad;
It just is, and it is what you make of it.
I will tell you that our world is absolutely not at all friendly / accommodating / accepting of adhd or otherwise “different” people.

ADHD absolutely confers a lot of strengths / benefits, and a lot of weaknesses / challenges.

One year I was teaching, I had 2 ADHAD students who had particularly difficult issues with their diagnosis & couldn’t function without their medication. I ended up explaining to a class that they were both in that ADD/ADHD wasn’t a disability for everyone and that I also had an issue with it & that I use it to my advantage. The look on both of their faces was absolutely amazing and one of astonishment, and I was so glad that I was able to get that message out to everyone in my class that day because I knew that they weren’t the only ones who were dealing with those symptoms in that year.

I'm a mechanic, I fabricate things from metal, weld, and build things. Repair things that aren't supposed to be fixed.
I know my ADHD takes over, sometimes allowing me to hyperfocus, and complete a task most people can't even visualize.
My son is 12. The school wanted a meeting with me. They said the same exact thing I heard at his age.
"Very smart but does not care to complete homework. We believe he needs medication to help focus."

So I ask, "what about art? He does extremely well in art.
What about math, he ace's any test you can give him. He knows the material, why does homework matter if he already knows the material?"
He learns so fast, he is bored by the time the other students finally get it.
School was not designed to help people learn. It's designed to make you think a certain way. I'm not going to medicate away the very same thing that makes me an asset in society.

ADHD is a challenge, but also can give us more creativity and compassion. Thanks for noticing that different doesn’t always equal bad.

I guarantee the chef who thought to put kimchi into Mexican food was more influenced by the weed he was smoking than the adhd…

My theory is that ADHD was diagnosed as a bad thing, because the teachers weren't equipped to handle those types of students.

Teachers are trained to act like prison wardens not cultivators of creativity and critical thinking.

It’s a hassle to handle but I can work with my ADHD. My ocd made it a little hard to handle but I overcame that quite well… God, time plus no Ritalin made me stronger for it. Always get proper sleep and take a very good liquid supplement. That’s what helped me.

"Debunked" is the wrong word to describe what he's talking about.

ADHD is the golden superpower.
Lack of focus and follow through though, can really sux.

It’s made me a Jack of all trades. I’ll build up great skill in whatever my current interest is, and then just completely lose interest and be on to the next shiny (and difficult) thing. Having experience in many different areas has lent itself to ease and speed of improvement in new activities.

It’s just a different style. It can have negative and positive effects depending on one’s environment and how well people have adapted to the environment with their style. It’s really Attention Inconsistency Pattern. We have the ability to hyper focus then lose attention quickly in some venues.

He's absolutely right. I've experienced this in my life and have found that I tend to see a bigger picture where others haven't. Of course my attention to detail is terrible. Lol.

I am quote unquote disabled. I'm only 50 years old and I was 20 I worked my entire life anyway my point is.
I always found that my brain injury allowed me to look at things in a different perspective

Even with the diagnosis, I can hyperfocus certain tasks like writing code. You learn strategies to overcome challenges. If I can relate to a task or find it interesting, I will latch on and work for hours. Especially if the task is mentally challenging. After decades of actively working on Executive Function Disorder strategies, it has become a blessing. It also helps to be married to a Behavioral Therapist.
