Basalt is ONLY FORMED through volcanic action....it is molten stone....it becomes Trachite under pressure....both are like glass and resonate sound A LOT....if it IS basalt, then there WAS a molten centre causing volcanic activity, if it has since cooled, it stands to reason that the molten centre shrank as it cooled and MUST be hollow to a fair degree....maybee half.
