Thanks for the tutorial, I just got a computer from a friend running Linux so I'm a Linux Newbie it came with 17.2 and manage to update to 17.3 by reading instructions from the net. Then I follow your instructions and I was able to do it now is running 18, so far look like is working.

thank you. love linux mint, i use it at work and home. i use it since version 14, i reinstall new version every 6 months, but i stoped doing that on 17.x, now i am planning this weekend of upgrade to 18.x, at least on my laptop. regards from cancun.

hi, just an update to the channel. i didnt see andy post until it was late, i also crashed my update and ended making a fresh new install from scratch, this time with 18.x, so this was my experience. as a bottom line i like to say that it is a very hard decision when to change to the next upgrade, its our choice, it will come the time when is right to do it. regards from cancun to the channel.

You did much more than what is explained officially ;-) I did not do all that to run mintupgrade upgrade at the very end... thanks anyway.

i always do a fresh install. it can be a pain to do every time a new lts comes out but in the long run its great because the system is more stable and will always have less issues.

I did my backup and clean installed. I honestly say, 17.3 has been perfect. Looking back, I kinda wished I would have just waited on 18.1 as well.

Hey Joe, great video. It very closely matched my experience of upgrading but, sadly, once I started using the upgraded system there were so many issues I gave up and did a clean install. Even the clean install had issues with Synaptic, Banshee, Audacity and Spotify as well as screen flicker, none of which happened in 17.3 so I have downgraded again for now. I now have 18 installed on my spare laptop so will be monitoring it until it stabilises enough to be my main distro, which I'm sure it eventually will.

I just back up my home directory, including all the config files and do a clean install. I apply a few tweaks but for the most part it all runs smoothly enough.

Everything seemed to install well on my Dell Insperion I5 machine. The most noticeable and immediate difference noticed was my mouse pad operates backwards. Everything else seems to be working well

My laptop is pretty weak. 2GB of ram and it has windows 10. I may be wrong, but I think the heavy memory usage of windows 10 is slowing down my computer. I have used windows for all of my life but I want to switch to linux. Will linux mint help speed up my laptop, and is it a good OS for a first time linux user? If not, what would be a good and light alternative?

Heh.. I've so many PPA's to get semi-UTD applications that it's hardly worth the trouble.
Tried the upgrade process this afternoon via a clean 17.3 VM install and while the upgrade worked fine, it's probably safer for most people to backup all their data and install cleanly since the upgrade files are just under 1.2GB anyway and a need to install/remove files even afterwards. Too repeat what's been said, an upgrade from a cleanly installed system will probably be fine, but a long suffering system with edited files is a total mine field.
These relatively short release cycles on LTS builds are kind of why I'm edging to using a rolling distro (like Manjaro) as my daily driver. Newer apps from a known location w/out having to mess with PPA's.

So, will this method also works for dual-booted computers? I have Linux Mint 17.3 along with Windows 10 on my Dell Vostro 5460.

hey i had my wifi card in mint 17 system stop connecting..prior to a huge move. I'm back setup with same problem...wondering if something changed in my hotspot i'm trying to use or what. possibly some upgrade would fix? or did my wifi card die? I still see my verizon hotspot from my phone...it just spin cycles when i try to connect

Another great instructional video. Good work by the Mint Team too! How come MS doesn't advise to upgrade only if necessary? Advice headed. I have to admit I have developed a great relationship with Rosa. How does the upgrade work if 17.3 dual boots with Win7. Is the dual boot screen kept and upgraded to LM 18? Just for future reference.

What if Linux Mint 17.3 cuts support in 2019 and you have to upgrade?
