Today we’re looking at what we think is the Best Starter Camera for Video Production, the Canon C100. In our C100 review we go over what features it has to offer and why we believe it’s the best first camera for video creators and videography.

If you're not sure about using a DSLR or video camera for filmmaking, see the differences here. The Canon C100 offers more standard video production features than a DSLR or Mirrorless camera. Some key differences with the C100 are its built in XLR inputs, dual sd recording options and internal ND filters. All this for under $2000. No it doesn't film 4k, but is that something you need?

We also included some Canon C100 sample footage so you can see what the camera is capable of. If you're trying to figure out whether to pickup a Mirrorless Camera, DSLR or video camera for filming just remember to think about the features you need, and if you'll need to buy additional gear to make your Mirrorless or DSLR camera function how you want it to.

Overall we believe the Canon C100 is a great camera for the price and the best starter camera you can buy to get into video production. DSLRs and mirrorless cameras definitely have their place, but require add-ons and attachments that will cost you more money. The Canon C100 has everything you need to start making content already built in and ready to go. What do you think is the best first video camera or best starter camera for video production? If you're looking for the best video camera under $2000, the C100 is definitely worth a look!

Great video! I'm getting my first ever camera and was going to get a DSLR before seeing this! Now im hella confused!
What would be some good lenses to get with it to start me offf? I never know whats compatible. Im going to use it to make short films mostly but possible vlog type stuff too. Im a real novice technically so a little worried this might be too high spec a camera for me but anywho...Also does it shoot slow mo at 1080? And does it have a built in mic for scratch sound? And finally, i know its a video camera but can i take stills with it? Just incase i might want to photgraph an image that im shooting etc?
Thanks alot for your help!

Canons C line is a great line up in general, and with the the C100 you definit get a good starting point into the world of cinema. Great Video :)

I’ve had my C100 a few months and love it! I can’t see myself ever going back to a DSLR or mirrorless cam

C100 is my favorite of my cameras. I also have a Canon XC15 which is fabulous all except for getting shallow dof, and i own the BMCC 2.5k which is darn close to an Arri in my opinion when filming in raw, but then you're carrying batteries, and it still is time consuming work to get the dof you want on all your shots. And my 5D mk II which is still pretty awesome also, except for no clean hdmi but that is what i use for my stock photography work for SS.

Outside of the brilliant image oversampled image, the dual pixel AF is the star of the show for me. I do a lot of run and gun work for events, weddings, etc, and it's a serious, nearly flawless workflow enhancer. 1080p is here to stay for awhile, folks. This camera is still a great investment.

What camera did you use to shoot this video?

Do I need a gimbal when I'm shooting with this for a documentary film? It's going to be a lot of walking with camera and children which have many unpredictable moves.

Looks great, just a shame it's not 4k but then i guess it'd be much more expensive.

It’s not an ergonomic buoy camera But has good stuff for camera users.
But these days I think 4K is Something to look for, Canon missed out there and Sony filled the space quicker.
Still it’s a badass camera for the price if you shoot HD

99% of what we watch is HD. The fact is, most media consumption is now on mobile. That 6K camera won't help when someone is watching your YouTube video on their phone.
