Hard woods and hook tooth blades make my bandsaw bounce

preview_player

Investigating some "buncing" I get with a sharp new hook tooth blade while resawing ironwood. This problem seems to be limited to using hook tooth blades on really hard woods like ironwood, though it happens to a lesser extent with hard maple and ash.

Interestingly on the sawmill side of things, hook angle is one of the blade characteristics you specify. Width, thickness, tpi, and hook angle. 13 degree for softwoods; 7 for hardwoods; 4 for exotics.

Woodworking interests me little, but your videos are always very interesting for your problem solving and investigations. As we watch, we always learn something. Reality based, unlike the endless confabulations by the leagues of the witless. You never waste a moment of our time.

This is such a great lesson in figuring things out.
That's one of the best things about your channel.
Many people these days can't do this because we're trained to defer to the "Scientists" to tell us what is true. _Or_ we're so bullied by the current obsession with logic fallacies that we are afraid to extend our minds into what we're perceiving.

Thank you for showing us what _real intelligence_ looks like!

Regardless of if you're right or wrong, watching your thought process is always interesting.

This is one of your best videos for practical visuals. It's chalked full. Love it

I really like your videos like this that visually illustrate what is happening. I wouldn't know if it weren't for your video explanations! Thanks so much!

Thank you for all the effort you put into this, this really helps all of us think a little more about what blade we might be using before using a bandsaw. Really appreciate it :)

I tried my best to address people's pet theories. But it appears not enough. Too many pet theories, and people still suggest the ones I addressed already.

Love the way that engineer's mind of yours works. I always learn so much when you do these.

These are some of my favorite type of videos of yours. Learning the cause of some sort of issue.

let's take a moment to honor all these pieces of perfectly good wood that were sacrificed in the name of science

I had a similar problem with the bandsaw I built. I found that increasing the blade speed helped reduce the chatter considerably. It’s as simple as a pulley swap and a bigger v-belt.

It's all a matter of optimizing the tooth geometry, SFM, tension, and table rigidity. I have no doubt you will find and resolve the problem, you've tracked down and resolved tougher problems than this!

I built a 20inch bandsaw years ago and had the same issues with ironwood. I have more to mill up now, so this video was very specifically helpfully to me.

I really like the way you explain things and how you take the time to make visual models when it's called for :)

Excellent analysis, Matthias! I am the Engineering Manager for a bandsaw blade manufacturing facility in the US and your theories are in alignment with our tooth profile suggestions. I am actually impressed how much a couple degrees of hook angle really makes a difference. We observe this different ways when our customers cut meat products, but the principle is the same. In some cases we had "high speed" saws in the field that were far too aggressive for operators given a 6-degree hook angle, but changing to a 2-degree hook angle and the behavior changed completely. Most of what we do is for the food industry, but we do offer some variable pitch resaw/dismantling blades that work a treat. Let me know if you'd like any and I'd be happy to send some samples your way for further evaluation! Thanks, -Ron

I have used a carbide tipped resaw king blade in the past. I am sure you have covered this already. Love your videos! Big fan! Can’t wait for the plans of the new bandsaw

Thanks for this, been having a similar problem with my saw and Ash.
