I love how you went really DEEP with this response, and it took an interesting turn that I wasn't expecting.

That's such a great point about some singers wanting or thinking that their voice "should" sound one way, and adamantly pursuing it to the exclusion of other options. It ultimately comes down to knowing ourselves well and living our TRUTH.

There are always transferable lessons in just about ANYTHING, aren't there? You do such a great job at connecting all the dots in life. Thanks, Freya...another great video. :)

Hard work definitely beats the talent. That's my radical opinion !

Our mentality around hard work can hold us back. ‘I’m exhausted and stressed bc I’m working so hard!’ Not as sustaining as ‘I’m having fun learning new things and pushing myself and I want to keep doing this forever!’

Why do we hate our own voice. When we listen ourself in a recording.

I guess I have 50% talent and need to work hard for the rest of the 50%

I love the way you put this Freya because it tells anyone no matter what level of talent you have you can still get there. So it may take a little more work. Some more than others. It’s OK. There is still joy in the journey.

Prior to my having a serious struggle with my voice, I never used to have to think about technique. After I got sick and stopped singing - and my body started changing - it became nearly impossible for me to sing. Lots of illness, surgeries to my abdominal & backp muscles - yea..BUT I KNOW I am suppose to sing and have been doing the hard work consistently, day in and day out since vocal therapy (this time last year) and I’m now actually a Voice major in college, starting to see results from the hard work; the hard work that I never really had to do before. So I guess you could say I was 70/30 before and then I became 30/70 (if that) and now I’m on my way to 100.

If we want it, we’ll do it. I couldn’t on my own though. Freya is spot on with everything I’ve heard her teach.

I am blessed to have amazing NATS voice teachers. They’re all over the world. It’s a miracle we have two of them right where I live. With their help, I’m going to be better than I was before I got sick so if I can do it, you can do it!

I think it's detrimental when someone (a beginner in particular) starts to judge him/herself based on how much talent he/she supposedly has. Mainly because most people aren't even able assess themselves objectively when they're just starting out. Which goes both ways: I'm sure most of you know both people who highly overrate and those who highly underrate their own voice.

I've met quite a few people who are still stuck in this mindset that being untalented means you won't be able to improve (at all or after hitting some imaginary wall). On the other hand when people say that someone IS talented, they often ignore the effort this person went through to become better.

So yeah, it's more like how much you're standing in your own way by thinking in such a way and - like you said, Freya - what your initial situation is at the point you begin your journey to become a musician. But that really isn't something a beginner should worry about.

Unfortunately tone is something that is down to the structure of your face and the cavities within your face and skull. Ever noticed how the best singing impersonators actually look like the singers they impersonate? Some people just have amazing tone and all they need to do is learn how to sing in tune and bingo they're streets ahead of anyone else with half the work.

Oh great! I'm 10% talent 90% work... Lost cause!

I'd say 70% talent and 30% hard work, for sure. Bc the tone of your voice is tough to hone on strictly work. People were born with certain voices. ha

Hey you are a professional and know everything about singing but why aren't you a famous singer?

But what to do if our voice is made for those smooth soothing songs but our interest is towards hard and high pitched tough songs??
