Itching in Pregnancy: PUPPPs vs Cholestasis of Pregnancy Discussed by Dr Nari Heshmati

Itching during pregnancy is a common concern. Many women have PUPPPs which is itching that occurs in the stretch marks on the abdomen and is not harmful. This can be confused with cholestasis of pregnancy which is itching that occurs initially on the palms and soles. Cholestasis has increased risks in a pregnancy including fetal death so earlier delivery is recommended. In this video, Dr Nari Heshmati, a board certified OBGYN in the North Seattle area (Everett, Washington) discusses the difference between the two conditions.

Cholestasis is NO JOKE! I had it twice, 14 week onset, then 11 week onset. Mine was severe and excruciating. And most doctors know little or nothing about it!

I've got intense itching on my ankles and legs. I've noticed that I had nearly every single symptom of cholestasis, but I've had the bile blood test and they all looked really good. My doctor doesn't think I have it but can't explain my itching. It drives me crazy. Baby has looked really healthy on ultrasound. No itching in any stretch marks or on my hands. Are the bile tests ever wrong or inaccurate? Maybe the lab didn't process them right?

I've been itching since I hit 11 weeks pregnant and was diagnosed with cholestasis of pregnancy yesterday. I am just coming up to 18 weeks pregnant and even tho I've been put on medication I'm still very anxious and worried about my little baby boy. 😢

I had pupps in my last pregnancy it was awful and got worse after I had my son. I ended up on iv steroids to get rid of it. This pregnancy iv just been diagnosed with cholestasis. I'm wondering if there is a link between these two.
