Honestly, we're all overpaying for cars right now. The market is still crazy and it's now normal for 5k cars to be 7k. At least you paid 7k for this and not something like a clapped out Civic that's been owned by 7 different people and saw everything throughout the years. As for things to consider for the future, I think a manual swap would do a lot to improve the fuel economy. A 3 speed auto is a pretty significant handicap, especially if you do a lot of highway driving.

Welcome to the community of Metro owners! My daily driver is a 93 convertible that I paid $200 for because it had a broken timing belt. Word to the wise, the shop manuals are wrong when they say that the 1.0L engine is interference. It is NOT. All you have to do when the timing belt breaks is put a new one on. There are a few parts you have to remove to get to it, so it still is about a 3 hour job, but your valves will not be damaged by a timing belt failure. As far as compact 2 seat convertibles go, the trunk on the Metro is cavernous. I pick up large grocery orders in my Metro all the time with no problems. Try looking at the trunk size in an MG or a Miata... Also, to the people like Doug DeMauro who are so appalled at the non-remote controlled passenger side mirror, that was pretty normal in regular cars in the late 80's and early 90's. The Metro convertible is essentially a 1990 Metro, which is pretty much a facelift of the 1989 Metro. There were some things upgraded in the facelift, but the general standards of the build are rooted in the late 80's. If you want to compare the Metro to other cars, compare it to its contemporaries. Look at what was in a 1990 Honda Civic, or Toyota Tercell. The Metro is just as good, and its features are comparable, except neither of those cars came in a convertible...

If you're getting mileage in the 20's, you need to have your compression checked. The automatics did get worse mileage, but it should be in the mid 30's, not 20's. Another clue is the lack of acceleration from stop. They aren't dragsters, but I am rarely the last off the line when the light turns green, nor am I often the last to cross the opposite crosswalk lines. I can easily out-accelerate other cars that are just doing normal acceleration if I need to get into their lane for an exit coming up. I won't be able to do that against hot-headed punks that are trying to race, but the point is that the Metro, when in good working order, can keep up with traffic just fine. I can also keep up with freeway traffic at 70 without any trouble, as well. Now granted, my Metro is a stick shift, but one of my daughters has an automatic, and it can accelerate from stop just fine in town. And it needs the engine overhauled.

I'm glad you're happy with your price you paid, but yes, you did overpay. In the condition yours is in, I wouldn't have paid more than 3000, especially with the auto. Your car is cosmetically beautiful, but your description of performance sounds like you need an engine overhaul. Also, despite your top looking to be in good condition, you disprove your statement attesting to its condition by describing how difficult it is to close. The reason it is so difficult is because the vinyl has shrunk, and needs to be replaced. When this happens, everyone keeps fighting to close the top, and eventually, those plastic latch blocks break. You can't buy new ones anymore from the manufacturer, although there are some high quality replacements that some in the Metro enthusiast fold have created. If your blocks aren't broken now, get that top replaced before they get broken, and splurge on the canvas top. It costs $100 more than the vinyl, but it lasts longer and fits better (and looks much nicer).

You mentioned getting compliments on the Metro. Its funny how back then, people would clown on these cars like crazy. Whether it be from friends, family, strangers, or the media. Now, with todays insanely high gas prices and boring tablets on wheels, people envy these rigs!

Mine was a 4 door Metro hatchback. Loved it, front seats were good, back seats not so much. Loved the 45 miles to a gallon. I would take it back. BTW I am 6'3" and had plenty of room.

I saw some POV vids of this car, got to admit this 3 cylinder sounds better than most modern 3 cylinder citycars in Europe (it's actually a Suzuki engine with 3 valves per cylinder instead of 2 valves which was the norm at that time). It's more fun to drive a slow car fast with revvy engines than fast cars slow in my opinion.

Both my 94 and my 96 Metros were more reliable than my Honda.
I put 210K miles on my 94 in only 2 years.
I had to drive from Salem, Oregon to LA California and back every weekend (my weekends were 3 days).
The only time it saw 55mph was when it was on its way to 85mph.
It burned 1/2 quart of oil between oil changes from the day I bought it new to the day I sold it 2 years later at 210K miles.
The reliability was Awesome.
The catalytic converter went out at 51K miles so I removed it, put in a straight pipe and the check engine light burned until I sold it.
Before removing the catalytic converter I was getting 50mpg and afterwards I was getting 55mpg.
One ONE tank of gas, I had a strong tailwind and I got 80mpg.
I filled up in Salem and drove to Bakersfield, CA, (800 miles). My Metro died on the off ramp and I coasted into the gas station.
It took 10 gallons to fill it up.
I went through 1 clutch, 2 sets of brakes, 3 sets of tires.
When I traded it in the salesman said, ”Oh it’s 2 years old with only 21K miles”.
I told him that it was 210K miles, not 21K. I told him to go check it again.
He came back and said, “I knew you were pulling my leg and I read that it has only 21K miles.
They gave me $1K less than I paid for it new.
When I bought it in November of 93, Costco did their car buying program different than they do now.
Back then it was $100 over dealer cost for a Metro and $1K over dealer cost for a Cadillac.
Geo had a $300 rebate, so I bought my 94 for $200 below dealer cost.
I paid $5, 700 for it (the window sticker was $8900).
When I traded it in for my 96, they gave me $4, 700.
It did look like new.
I drove my 96 for 13 years and by the time I bought my 96 I no longer had to drive to LA and back, so my 96 had only 95K miles.
The guy who bought my 96 had worn out 2 Metros and was looking for his 3rd.

I had a '92 LSI. It got 50 mpg, in High School. It was stripped down, manual EVERYTHING. I was blown three lanes of traffic in a big wind gust. It's a 3 banger. I had o JB weld my tranny pan seal because to replace seal was over $3k, even way back then.

Both my Metros have been 5spd transmissions.
I’ve heard that the automatic transmissions are painfully slow and yes even with the 5spd, you always needed to turn off the A/C if you were trying to go up a steep slope.
The 55hp engines are just that, 55hp.

I love my 92 Geo Metro LSI convertible, 3 cylinder, 5 speed from Neveda. No rust. Just put a new canvas top on it. 57 MPG, What's not to like about that.

my grandma owns this car in yellow, it’s broken down a bit and needs work but it will be mine soon i hope and im gonna be doing a lot to it. i have so many memories with her in that car and i hope she can let me buy it off her.

There's a 1991 convertible Metro that's being sold at a specialty classic car dealership near me for over $11K so I think you did good finding this one with a rust-free exterior.

I've never had problems with exhaust valves. That is probably caused by a clogged EGR system, which is easy to remedy. The only issue I have is the synchos on the manual transmission can wear.

My Dad has a 1993 Honda Civic that this Geo reminds me a lot of. It’s also a bright red coupe just like that Geo, but just really faded on most of the car lol. Good purchase though! Enjoy that little convertible!

The Cultus convertible is the one to own. This one looks like it has been in a rear end collision as the bumper and rear garnish paint doesnt match. Probably because the factory primer wasnt sprayed first before the base coat.

Mines a 5 speed manual, it Flies except steep uphill but downshifting takes care of that.

I bought one of these, same color, convertible as well, 2 years ago, for $200, it had no brakes and a good amount of rust, I was driving it home from when I bought it and I took a turn and the front of the frame snapped from rust and the front wheel went sideways, so I towed it to the junkyard, I got to drive it 2 miles!!!
