Surgeon Knot vs FG Knot (Strongest Fishing Knot Contest Reply)

This video shows a test between a 5 turn Surgeon Knot and the FG Knot. We created this video as a reply to one of our viewers that was wondering how his Surgeon knot compared to the super strong FG knot.

The FG Knot won our initial best knot contest, but a great comment came in from Tony mentioning the 5 turn surgeon knot. We gave it a shot and the results were great for both knots...

However the FG still holds it place at the top while the Surgeon knot gave an impressive performance... on 10 lb braid going the 30 lb fluorocarbon, the line lasted all the way until the 18 to 19 lb range.

Surgeons loop doubled has not failed me in 40 years of fishing, at least 100 days on the water a year

The "triple surgeon's loop" is actually the 6 turn doubled line surgeon's loop. People get confused and think it is 3 turns. For braid to mono I use a 6 turn line to line. I know the FG and others are probably better, but I just know I can consistently tie this one.

I usually run 8lb jbraid to a 12-15lb floro leader. I use a 6 to 8 turn surgeons knot. Doesn't impede on casting and really holds up. FG knot is far too complicated for tying on the water. Maybe for pre rigging the night before.

Surgeon knot is good. FG is just another animal, I have a handful cases that my main line or leader broke (in the middle of the line) and the FG survived when bluefin tuna fishing. I cannot help to think the FG knot is not only 100% strength but even strengthens the line.

Six wrap surgeons knot has never let me down when joining braid to fluorocarbon. On extremely rare occasions I get bitten off by pike when using 4 lb fluorocarbon, but I always use barbless hooks so this is not really an issue

Please try the gt knot! In my testing the gt was more than 10%stronger. I'd like to set someone else try it cause I haven't seen one other test. Also I am a salt strong insider or paying member. Love you guys!

I tie the fg at home with my braid to topshot. If I have to tie a new one on a rocking tuna boat I use the rp knot

What is the best knot from mainline braid to a lighter weight leader?

Just learn to tie the FG. It gets easier. There are many different ways. I found one that suits me.

I'm curious if this test would be different if you switched knots and had the fg knot closer to your hands. Also disappointed not seeing the failure strength of these knots compared.

Can you test the blood (dropper) loop knot against other popular same-sized mono-to-mono connections like double uni, surgeon's, and the original blood knot?

For the time it takes to tie a FG and knowing the 5tSK can take close to 50% over the line rating, I'll take the 5tSK for the simplicity and ease over the FG. Cool video.

Hmmmm any recommendations for a knot to be used with 6lb nanofil braid and 8lb flurocarbon?

Thanks for doing these tests. I can see myself using the fg knot but having it tied before I go out fishing on the boat. When in a time crunch I'll do the surgeons doubled over or the albright. Have you tested the albright with the braid doubled over?

Why wouldn't you test one not at a time?
