Unless you’re a senior commissioned officer you’re not going to serve 35 years on active duty

However it is to consider that the high rate of child mortality decreased the overall live expectancy on average. People back then still could live a somewhat long life, but since many children died during their first five years after birth, the average was a lot lower than the actual life expectancy for people that made it through the first five to ten years. There are many examples of Romans that lived way longer than the average live expectancy, Ovid, Cicero, Plinius (the older one), to mention a few.

Of course, one could argue, that these people were rich patricians, and had a lot of money and didn't need to work hard labour or go to war. On the other hand, Cicero and Ovid both were exiled, and Plinius was, even in older age, pretty active in and around Pompeii.
They might not be the perfect average Roman, but they are, what we know. Still we can see with these examples, that there is a great difference between the average live expectancy and the average life expectancy of people other than children.

The US military today offers retirement after 20 years. Retirement gives a percentage of the member's current pay for, I think, the rest of their life.

A soldier's lifespan was often shorter than an average Roman as it was dangerous work.

When your lifespan is 40, 25 years is a lot.

If you made it into childhood, you had a strong chance of making it to 60 +

People often shouldn't listen to life expectancies because they're often proven to be with long leaders make it long because of the death of children during their younger years when when you initially get through those years you're pretty much guaranteed to live a long life that a normal human can live

About five years considering the living conditions I think that might be overdoing it

Twenty years seemed to take forever in the military, .at least for me. Once you're hitting 30+ I'm thinking it can drag on if you're not in a good command or not the position you want to be in. But once you get that 20 year letter baby, things are much different.

It's all relative considering that a soldier back then could be kicked out of the army & forced to fight in the Colosseum 🏟 for failing battle orders Or falling asleep on the job . As we know, being sent to fight anyone Or an animal in the Colosseum was no guarantee of survival ( to return back to the army ) . ♑️✍️🇳🇴🇦🇺

Only citizens could become legionnaires, auxiliaries were the local native soldiers who the Romans had conquered and served them

The length of a lifetime of a Roman soldier no matter his condition even worse the average around 40 to 251 and that's only if he was in the best of shape and took care of himself most would pass away before their 45th birthday
