50:26 Constantine did NOT make Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. He tolerated it and legalized it, and he himself was Christian, but the actual conversion of the Roman Empire was under Theodosius I decades later.

Lesson of the Roman Republic- having an extensive foreign empire isn’t good for a representative government at home.

Dangit! Now I'm thinking about the Roman Empire. The one thing I actively try to avoid doing.

What surprised me the most was the complete absence of Marcus Aurelius.

We're watching the decline of western civilization before our eyes. This time period would be crazy for historians to study and ask why we intentionally caused and welcomed our own demise

As a Rome nerd I love people online exploring the amazing empire of Rome from Romulus to Tarquinius Superbus. From Brutus to Caesar. From Augustus to Romulus "Augustulus" From Constantine to Constantine the Twelfth. The Kingdom, Republic, and Empire was amazing and many secrets are still to uncover.

Also let’s not forget Grand Moff Tarkin, who was unjustly killed in a rebel assault

It was mostly the consistent civil wars to determine who the next emperor would be, instead of having the senate vote on the previous emperors choice and making it illegal for a general to take the throne by force!
The split on the empire and moving the capital to a different city did not help with unity and keeping Rome, well Roman. So when the west fell the east allowed the west to defend its self. With out the ewsr, the eastern empire became something different that really wasn’t Roman anymore.
There were also religious changes with Christianity taking power over Hellenism making everyone basically convert causing even further turmoil and loss of self.
The barbarians did finish off the empire, but some actually ran the empire through puppets at the end, but they tried to run it themselves and well they weren’t capable so the moire split and smaller kingdoms formed that didnt even last long.

Every empire collapses under its own weight if it survives long enough. You cannot escape people who are the fatal weakness.

There have been moments in which I wondered if the Roman Empire perhaps, just segued into being the Roman Catholic Church. Powerful worldwide.
