Lumix S5IIX: Is shooting FHD 1080 in 2023 so HORRIBLE?

Are you fine shooting FHD 1080 is 2023? On a camera like the LUMIX S5IIX that shoots 6K video - is there a place for shooting 1080? I think there is and I also think that FHD 1080 on the S5IIX looks incredible. But for over $2000, should I even be talking about shooting FHD 1080 in 2023?

You mentioned that you were editing in a 1080p timeline… I see that this video is available and processed by YouTube in 4K, so I’m just wondering what your export settings are. I will often shoot in 4K, edit in 1080p, and then export using compressor at 45Mbps, so that YouTube will process it as a 4K video… The results are stunning…YouTube processes the image so much better this way.

My bff shoots 1080 all day and has had various music, fashion, documentary videos and exhibition work out in the world for magazines and clients and no one blinks an eye. Personally we both feel its a more organic / dreamy feel.

What is that horrible mush of pixels in the beginning of the video? I cannot discern even a single detail on my personal 16K IMAX home theatre sitting in the first row

In my tests on the S5 II and x, the sensor can't do PDAF on full-frame at 50p and above, regardless whether you're filming 1080, 4k or anything else. This doesn't affect 4k since 4k at 50 / 60 are in only the APSC crop where it can still do PDAF. But 1080 full-frame at 50p upwards switches to DFD CDAF only. If you want PDAF on 1080 at 50 / 60p, you may want to test the crop version.

I decided to go back to 1080p for my 1.5h+ interviews and podcast work. HDDs storage prices are high and I like the faster workflow. I use the S5 + S5II for my work.

For the past few client videos on my GH5, I’ve actually been shooting ALL-I 1080p 10-bit and upscaling and no one can tell a difference.

4k ist no more than a working tool (for me) to have the ability to crop in post - besides that it is not needed in most use cases even in 2023.
Most people are not able to tell 4k and 1080p apart on a normal screen from my experience.
I shoot 1080p whenever it is possible for my projects because it additionally simplifies the work process in post.

I mostly shoot in 1080 P, I remember when 1080 P first came out, and how blown away everyone was by the image quality.

We deliver most content in 4K, cropped or scaled from mostly 6K open gate from the S5M2 and GH6. I can see myself filming in 1080p though, the images look pretty damn good and the absence of the crop factor actually makes me consider using this from time to time. If you need the extra resolution just run it through an AI upscaler such as Topaz. Thanks for showing this and make me consider my options on future shoots.

For quick turnaround 16:9 projects, 1080 works well, though more and more I’m composing for the crisscross (vertical and horizontal content from the same shot) and wanting to have the open-gate source files to pull from. Open-gate is kinda hard to ignore these days, which is one of the key reasons why I chose the S5IIx.

I couldn’t agree more. The 4K 60 crop on a 6K camera is silly. And the fact that the only 120 fps we get is in 1080….That’s frustrating. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a longtime LUMIX user. I’ve owned the G85, GX8, GX85, GH5, and my current setup is the GH5S, a pair of the S5 cams and a S5II. I love these cameras. The things they do well, are superb functions done extremely well. Simultaneously, when I bought an S5II I purchased a Sony that handles higher frame rates for that exact reason. I’m not going back to MFT even though the GH6 can handle 4K 120. A lot of what I shoot is low light. The G series are fabulous, but the the S is where I’ve transitioned because of the increased quality that covers my needs. If they gave the GH5s a 4K 120 upgrade, that’d be enough for some things. But as it sits, that’s a no go. Love the S5II. But I’ll invest in Sony for the areas where LUMIX cams fall short. There’s no perfect camera. But if we could shoot higher frame rates at 4K 120 & 60 with no crop, that LUMIX S5II would be the only camera I’d be using.

we need 4k 120fps in the Lumix s5ii & s5iix like gh6

Getting the slowest motion possible (within a reasonable budget) is a reason I focus heavily on the 1080 specs. This would apply to things like modeling, artistic work, and sports. 4k would be preferred if one can spend up to get it.

To be honest, if it wasn't for the fact that the clips were signed, I wouldn't have known they were shot in 1080 FHD.
On a 14 inch Macbook pro, the picture is great. On a 32-inch monitor, you might notice that it's somehow weaker than 4K. The shots, on the other hand, have that soft, film-like look.

For me, 1080 is acceptable, knowing that the recordings are going to the network and not to the big screen in the cinema.

Hi Caleb,
With S5 org I did upscale a lot of 1080p 100 fps to 4K no one notice anything and the result is great imho.
So it should be perfect with S5iiX with all i wow…
I want it so bad…

Awesome vid! One of the reasons why I want to grab the s5iix is internal 1080 prores.

No PDAF at 1080p 50fps+ but cropped 4K 50-60fps, I was actually thinking of shooting my slo-mo at 1080p but not anymore. I really wanted to love the s5iix but this simple fact makes me wanna go to with the fx30

I wish they would open up some options at 2.5k in a future update like what you get on black magic cameras. Really great resolution to work in and upscales nicely to 4K. Such a shame it’s not more common on these cameras.

I just got the S5 2 and the 1080P is very nice and sharp.
