A friend of mine literally fixed a whitespace inconsistency to be credited in the release notes for a popular OSS framework

"If I don't commit every 24 minutes, the library is abandoned"
This is prob the best meme about open source I have ever heard :D

I've huge respect for OSS devs. This world is filled with parasitic companies. They shamelessly use it without donating a penny to the maintainers.

What people think Open Source is: Everyone working together to make something well
What it actually is most of the time: An abandoned repo with 14 PRs and 73 forks that implement one of those PRs and none of the others that also soon get abandoned

"Let's see how much damage they did."

Ah, the cry of every PR review

"There is a bottleneck, and the bottleneck....is me" - Bold words came out his mouth, that day we devs know who to salvage later hahahaha

The 17" LCD adds one more level of realism to the picture 😆

No one reads the documentation, until you NEED to read the documentation, only to discover no one wrote the documentation, and now you complain there is no documentation.

"IRC? I was raised in IRC" I feel that.

“The Wi-Fi is down!”
“Yeah it is for me too, try the coffee shop… *I blocked it in the coffee shop as well.*”

"I have a full time job, working on OSS software" yeah that's a certified RIP in peace moment

"Deep into the night, at 4pm". The vampire lifestyle: no one expects it, it kind of just happens.

@ 1:36 How nice of him to pull a picture of Richard Stallman away from the shrine with 30 or so similar pictures that's sitting just to the left of the frame.

i remember someone let me take a shot at managing their android graphing library. lots of things that could have been improved with documentation and pull requests that were good. the repo spawned at least 10 issues per day, half of them in chinese, the other half were actually questions that were answered in the readme. why does no one read documentation. also someone made a pull request to add a candle stick (like stock market box and whisker plot) chart. that already existed in the library. had to nicely let the dude know that he wasted his time making this chart type that already existed because he just didn't look at the readme which literally contained a picture of the very chart he wanted. it was worst (only) open source experience of my life.

There is a bottleneck. That bottleneck is me.

As an open-source maintainer, I'm not sure if I feel seen or offended by this 😅

Open source nowadays is basically commercial software companies making money from developers working for free.

"No! People should hear this!" OSS devs are ultimately trying to get recognition they can't get at work.
