The internet, a historical revolution in the way we communicate has been around for barely 20 years and it took this long for the government to set up such an operation. I absolutely see Ed a hero considering he is sacrificing his comfortable life for the greater good, and the world needs to get angry now. Apathy is the worst thing that can happen, and it's gut-wrenching when you hear people saying it's not a big deal as long as you're not a terrorist.

Certainly, the "progressives" (whatever little that means anymore) haven't done much to fight against the police state, and in many cases they are as bad as the conservatives. Still, in general I think "progressives" rate slightly better--at least my state's senators do (Patty Murray, Maria Cantwell).
And as I indicated before, I think the mentality that "the world is a terrifying and dangerous place, therefore exceptional action needs to be taken" is very much a right wing staple.

But what annoyed me about the guy's comment was his use of the Ayn Rand term "statist, " which implies that the state must of necessity be menacing, invasive, and Orwellian--so therefore, let's get rid of that and live in some anarcho-capitalist, Wild West, free-for-all.

The root causes, elitism and corruption, are not exclusive to the groups you mention. It can happen just as easily in the marketplace or in corporations. The bottom line is money and power..
