Sometimes asking family members to donate to a cause/organization that you want to support instead of buying a physical gift has worked for me!

let’s say goodbye to the haters holding us back from that sustainable cooking content! 👋

As someone who has recovered from an eating disorder, what I eat in a day videos can be really difficult to watch because of comparing myself to others. Thank you for being one of the only sustainable channels that doesn't focus on food content.

I have added a sewing fabric marker to my bulk bags for the grocery store. So I can write the bulk number on the bag and it will wash out when I do laundry.

This year for Christmas I asked my family to buy me gift cards to local businesses that I love! That way you can choose sustainable businesses/products, receive a gift, and support local! 😊❤️

The best way to convince them is to be the example. Especially in your own home. Don't wait for them to start being sustainable. Start by yourself and they will often follow your example.

I've started asking relatives for homemade treats. My family is huge into baking/making sweets, so I ask for them to make me a batch of whatever and include the recipie with it. I also request a reusable container, but that's hit or miss

I love taking my reusable bags to the grocery store. I used to be embarrassed about taking them in, but then I realized I can fit $60 worth in 2 /3 bags, $100 worth in 4/5, and even $200 in maybe 6-8 bags!

I used to apologize to the cashier about it, but it turns out lots of cashiers here in N Texas all take their own. I also enjoy being able to pack my own bags and sort them into bags I want, and I use old plastic bags i keep at the bottom in case I need them for some reason.

I think my best recommendation for friends and family that refuse to not buy you stuff is to ask them to give you money for experiences. For example, one year I was planning a trip to a festival with my boyfriend and I asked my aunt to buy my ticket. Worked like a charm, I got no other gifts and she was super stoked to help me with that. 🙌🏼

I haven’t tried this with family but my ex and I used to focus on experiences, classes, or hobbies instead of random items. I think this can help to focus on the non-material gifts or productive items. My mom is a hoarder and there was a year when we didn’t want to contribute to her things and we all contributed to a dishwasher for her. Anything that would upgrade a home is another idea.

The best gift I have ever got was a dishwasher. At the time my husband and I had three kids of our own and were also taking care of one of my sister's two kids. So, we had a told of 7 people in our household. The dishwasher made life easier.

This year I asked for experiences or something fun that we can do together I feel like people understand and appreciate that more.

On recycling gift bags - my grandma and mom saved them year to year and I learned once the gift was out of the bag, the bag went in to bag pile folded bag up for next time. My kids learned the same. We re-use the sting and cute labels from year to year. Once a bag gets ripped or unusable we try and use it for wrapping smaller gifts. I have some string and baubles from my grandmother, that are still used today…..😘

For years and years, I’ve been afraid a snake will be in my toilet when I get up to pee at night. I was using my cell phone to peek in the toilet every time I got up to pee. My husband noticed and bought a toilet LED motion sensor light so the bowl lights up when I walk in. Best present ever!!! And just so thoughtful.

I got my parents to start recycling. Not by talking to them. Everytime I came over to help them (most of the time cook) I would gather the recycling and do it myself.
My siblings started to help me with this. Then out of the blue I see 4 diffrent recycling bins in the house. Sometimes small actions speak louder then words.

Yes, please do more of these type of videos! Lots of good tips here. I’m glad I’m not the only one who got excited when bulk bins “re-opened” ✌🏽🌱

I love seeing this style of video. Reminds me of the old grocery store challenges too!

And side note, I watch the Vlogs and think this is the calmest version of Cameron I have ever seen 😂 And I mean that in a good way. He seems like an awesome well rounded person.

Best gift I ever got was to use our family cabin in the woods, it’s off grid with a well and solar, only gets one radio station, and we got to go as a family shortly after husband returned from deployment #6. 12 days of family time, monopoly wars, twister, and campfires. Disconnected from everyone and everything that steals so much family time. I loved it!

How I try to ask for gifts from a consumerist family: I've started including a "things we don't need" list alongside my wish list! That way my husband and I don't keep getting the things that clutter our house or go to waste: throw blankets, household items like tools and flashlights, superfluous kitchen utensils, items that aren't our style, and the like. My parents etc. love to make fun of my ~sustainability~ in a lighthearted way, which just means they know it's important to me now - and they accept that my gifts come wrapped in reused packing paper from online orders :)
