I have an atom C3758R based pfsense firewall set up, 4 sfp+ 10g ports are lagg'd to my 10g managed switch. I've got vlans set up and working both on pfsense and on the switch. I'm using pfsense for inter-vlan routing. when i have 2 10g machines on the switch on the same vlan, I get full 10g connectivity (as measured by iperf3), when I have them on different vlans (going through the lagg on my pfsense firewall with an allow any/any rule for testing, single request test traffic goes down to ~2.3gb/s, if I do a parallel test of 10 concurrent requests, the best I get is 6gb/s. the firewall cpu is only hitting maybe 60% max, I am only running basic services (dns, dhcp, pf-blockerng, sshd, dns). I have tried turning off checksum offload, hardware tcp segmentation offload, hardware large receive offload, and disabling altq) all separately, none of them made any difference at all. would love some suggestions as to how to improve / optimize firewall throughput for inter-vlan routing/firewalling. thanks!
