Actually, the idea of sprucing up an old BEV makes really good sense because it's going to last so much longer than a smelly old ICE car. This could be a brilliant way to increase the revenue that BEV manufacturers make. There could be a massive third party business for interiors and accessories as long as the prices were competetive.

Love the idea of promoting Ebikes. Locally(Vancouver, BC) it has become a hit with the 65 plus. They promote activity, and are a lot of fun.

I'd already decided years ago to not buy a new car until I buy a BEV.

People buy cars as status symbols. BMW, Mercedes, and other “premium” brands have been trading on this for decades. What does it say about your status if you can only afford to replace the seats in your knackered old BMW rather than go out and buy a shiny new one?

The real reason for her statement is her knowing that BMW make a lot of money from spares and servicing.

I had a BMW once and remember how expensive their replacement parts were. They might make more from selling new seats and some other parts to refurbish used car than they would from selling a new car!

I hope replacing the seats will make it feel new. If my Tesla is going to last me 30 years (300k miles), those seats are going to be in some rough shape.

Replace the seats. And the engine. And the shock absorbers and brakes. Might need a new muffler too. Brilliant!

Fully agree that e-bikes are the ideal replacement for all cars in high density areas where average speed is anyway slower than the one of a bicycle (25km/h). We should stop that madness of wanting to move 1.5 to 3T vehicles for our 80kg bodies as an e-bike weight is about 22kg-30kg max. Bad weather is not an issue with good clothes. Energy savings will be huge !

BMW is starting to realize that by the time they can make enough EVs that, given current EV adoption rates, almost all buyers will already have purchased an EV from another brand. Then those cars will last more than twice as long as an ICE car. BMW will have no one to sell to…. at least not for a decade.

The only bad point in getting an e-bike is breathing in all the car fumes

BMW is partially correct... we should all stop buying new BMW cars!

What a ridiculous suggestion. Most people I know replace their vehicles for lower maintenance and better reliability. I have two cars, and '07 Caddy and an '04 Buick SUV. Both are low mileage and have been problem free. Cost of ownership has been and continues to be very low, and we drive less now since we are retired. Low insurance cost as well with basic coverage. Only Liability needed with these older low-value vehicles. When they become unreliable, then you assess the cost of repair/replacement with the cost of a new/replacement vehicle. One can do serious repairs for the cost of monthly payments and higher insurance. Be wise with your money; invest in TSLA stock. 🙂

Wait! Wait! I'm building the best EV. And it has a subscription model to start the EV. It's all great! It's going to be the ultimate driving machine.

Because EVs have such incredibly long life spans it's possible that constant refurbishment of the same car might become commonplace. With the majority of features being software driven using OTA updates, it stands to reason that some people will push their cars into two decades or more. At some point, people get tired of styling and want something new, otherwise why would fashion even exist? Same for cars, so that's also a factor. As far as sustainability goes, anyone from BMW purportedly caring strikes me as nonsense. They want the entire industry to take a coffee break so they can try to catch up. Good luck with that.

Public Transport: In my part of Oregon (a U.S. state) the only public transport is the BUS. Riding the bus to local grocery stores takes about 2.5 hrs, including shopping time. With that I can only bring home two bags and a gallon of milk. Hardly conducive to a bi-weekly grocery shop. An electric bike is even worse, as I'd only be able to carry the milk home, possibly one bag if I add a basket.

I like new cars for their reliability and dependability. I get rid of my older cars because they have repeatedly broke down at the most inconvenient times. I hope to afford a new EV someday. I can’t go grocery shopping on an ebike, but they do look fun to ride.

Aren’t they in the business of making and selling new cars? I wonder what his stockholders have to say about that?

I've been saying the same for years... It is insane that there are so many new combustion engine cars sold still. If it wasn't for emissions and safety, we could be driving cars from 1970 today. :)
Problem with old cars around here, if they otherwise run properly, is rust. There isn't any simple fix to that, it's a lot of work to fix a rusty car. But at the same time, many cars get scrapped because of minor faults or just to avoid the hassle of selling it.
I can vouch for that e-bikes get used more than regular bikes. I've done more commuting miles on my bike this year since I put a motor on it than I did in ten years combined before. :)
