i live in a county in texas where they don’t do emissions testing and i can tell you, highschoolers take full advantage of it 😂

In modern cars you actually loose hp if you get rid of the catalytic converter without programming it

Well, you can remove the catalytic converter, modify the fuel system to run E85, then have a good tuner put together a proper tune, and your engine will produce more power while reducing the emissions compared to stock. But of course, the EPA says this is illegal as well.

You could opt for a high flow catalytic converter if your state does inspections. I don’t know if it changes anything but I imagine having a catalytic converter at all is better than not having one.

As a Texan I can say that they don't check the muffler for a yearly inspection...they just check your lights and horn and that's pretty much it

I did this to a 1986 Audi Coupe I owned back in 1992. Didn't have a choice as the insides of the Cat came loose and it was either replace it, or hollow it out. I hallowed it completely. I had the car 4 more years after that and it passed CA Smog every time. Miss the 90's so much!

In my early days of being a 'gearhead' with carburetors and pre-electronic distributors, the adage was, ..."A high horsepower engine is an efficient engine and an efficient engine is a clean burning engine." I'd do a minor tune-up at least once a month to keep my engines performing at their peak horsepower. That seems to still apply. [Wink.] JMO.

It's also bad for the environment to remove that cat. _Some_ emissions regulations do very little, but the catalytic converter does a lot.

I’m in California, don’t have cats, and tuned on e85. Making power and saving the atmosphere :)
