Shedding out the hairiest horse in the world

This little mare is Raven. She was slaughter bound when we got her out of Tarheel Feedlot in 2018. She was three months pregnant and we did not know it. This girl has had a hard life but she is with us now and will never suffer again. We also have her baby. He was born Mother's Day 2019. Their story has a happy ending unlike the over 100,000 that get shipped to Mexico each year to be slaughtered. This video is a celebration of her and those homeless horses like her just waiting to be pulled out of the slaughter pipeline. Raven is hand's down the hairiest horse I have ever had. Every spring we go through an extensive shedding and bathing ritual to get her comfortable and get rid of all of that winter hair! Horses with coats this heavy tend to get "rain rot" which is a fungal condition of horses who have a heavy coat and their skin is sweaty or wet and can't dry out due to having such a heavy coat. so her spring ritual involves days of shedding her out and bathing her with medicated shampoo.

As my mare got older she grew fuzzier winter coats, most likely because it’s harder for older horses to stay warm. I LOVED shedding her out in the spring! So gratifying.

Is there a way to give a horse a blow out like they do with dogs? Like a shampoo and conditioner wash and then blow dry the hair off? Or will most horses go and run with a dryer?

I do believe that IS the hairiest horse in the world! Never seen a winter coat pulled out in handfuls like that! Yes, many birds and squirrels and mice will have very comfy nests this spring all thanks to Raven. I save my cats' hair all winter and then put it outside in the spring for the animals.
