In the Pacific Northwest it can be difficult to get large bulbing onions to mature. In order to set my garden up for success I choose to Grow a diversity of allium crops that thrive in my climate. Egyptian walking onions, perennial leeks, chives, Welsh onions, and my favorite annual onion: THE SHALLOT!!

Here is how I source my shallots as economically as possible and how I grow them for the biggest harvests of delicious onions.

About those Asian markets... Yams. Sweet potatoes, ginger, garlic, and even mushrooms that will grow in your gardens for much less than a garden center. :)

In New England, zone 5. I plant shallot bulbs in mid-October, at the same time as garlic cloves. Just like garlic, I save the best of my harvest to plant for the following year. Have kept those shallots going continuously for a decade. Works well here; give it a try if you're in a similar climate.

Perfect timing my dear! I’ve got a prepped bed, a bag of shallots and the weekend off!

Awesome! I haven't grown Shallots before. I didn't know they would do so well here. I'm growing leeks and garlic for the first time this year. I have had good crops of onions. I love the Allium family. Thanks for the tips!

Howdy neighbor!! I love connecting with gardeners in the Willamette Valley! I'm headed over to H-Mart asap to see what their shallot selection is like. I always poo-poohed shallots because they seemed like pretentious, overpriced onions. I'm totally going to grow them this week!! Happy first day of spring!! :) BTW, suuubbbbscriiiibed!!!! :)

Hi! Thanks for another lovely video. Will you "permaculture" in between the shallots, or do they need the bed to themselves? Again, thanks from a rather newbie food forrest enthousiast in Germany. I also have nearly 0.25 acres of front and back garden and am absolutely astonished how much you are fitting in yours!

Great post Angela. Do you have any advice for dealing with onion maggots? I have a four year rotation, but still all my alliums seem to get maggots.

After gently placing them in the soil, I shouldn’t put anything on top, right?

What Asian market in PDX for the shallots?

I’m interested in native alliums for their ease of care and pollinator benefits
