How to Plant Shallots

I love something that can be planted in the fall and harvested in the next year. If you’re into no-work gardening, this is it! A few days ago, I planted my shallots and thought I should do a quick video about it!

------------------------------

Shallots are planted in late fall when the ground is cooler. Planting at this time of the year gives them a boost in the spring for a more fruitful yield.

- I always start with a fresh layer of compost. Compost adds nutrients and helps keep a rich but well-draining soil.
- Inspect the seed shallots and remove any rotten ones.
- Plant the shallots 4-6 inches deep so the top point of the shallot is approximately 1 inch below the soil. Leave 4-6 inches apart on all sides.
- Mulch with shredded leaves to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Leave until ready to harvest in late spring or early summer!

I cover mine with leaves, it helps protect them from the cold over winter.

Thank you for this info! I know this is a dumb question but would you recommend watering every so often or is the mulch / leaves enough? I’m in west Texas so we hardly get snow lol.✨💜

Do you use just the bulbs or could you use the greens too?

Kaleb, since I've never planted shallots or used them in cooking, I'm assuming that you can use them in any recipe that calls for onions or garlic, is that correct? Also, where did you purchase your shallot sets? I've never noticed them for sale anywhere, but maybe that's because I've never looked for them before either. Have a wonderful weekend! ~Margie

Hey Kaleb.... I’m wondering if you’d be comfortable talking about your Frenchie? I’m a doctor out in Colorado and along with my ‘human’ practice, I work with a lot of animals, especially animals that have been considered ‘throw-aways’, because of both physiological and physical health problems. It’s only a request, and interest, about the situation and history of that wonderful companion of yours.... please don’t feel pressured to respond if I’m out of line.

I have heard that you shouldn't plant garlic near asparagus.
Thought that went for all allium.
Not bad for the allium...bad for your asparagus.
True Story?
