Facts: One of the most interesting is that it snows in Australia. Not only does it snow but they actually get more snow than Switzerland does in an average year. This is a fact about Australia that shocks most people who never think about it snowing in Australia but the fact remains that it does.

Ian, I forgot to mention. On Monday nights, I used to take our kids, and their teenage friends, skiing under flood lights, on Front Valley, Perisher. Sometimes it would be in a blizzard, and we could ski right to our car in the carpark. Such great memories!

Coincidentally I recently saw a vid on "Australias only alpine railway(skitube), which goes from bullocks flat to blue cow. It was designed by the Swiss I believe. I've been to Perisher once. And also Mount Buller in Victoria. Aside from parts of NSW and Victoria, it also snows in parts of Tasmania. And in one tiny part of Western Australia called the Stirling Ranges! (Bluff knoll I think). But I think the only places with enough snow for big ski fields and resorts are the Australian Alps accross NSW and Victoria. And apparently lesser known resort in Tasmania, which I discovered today!

Thredbo is the one to check out as it is a proper little alpine town full of chalets, looks great in winter and weird in summer hahaha.

Americans, like the young lady here almost does, pronounce Kosciuszko in the correct manner whereas we Aussies have bastardised it. If you take the connecting road between Soldier Stadium (go Bears) and the Adler Planetarium in Chicago you will see a grand statue honouring Thaddeus Kosciuszko in recognition of a great soldier / engineer and explorer. It was countryman Paweł Strzelecki who named our mountain when exploring here. The desert track in central Australia bears Strzelecki's name.

Hey, it's kind of weird that no one talked about this, but that park is named after Kościuszko, our Polish war hero from around the 19th century, it was named like that after some polish guy discovered some mountains and things like that in Australia. I expected someone to talk about how weird the name of the park is or whatever.

Hi Ian,
My wife and I used to live 30 kms from Jindabyne.. A beautiful area, and we learnt to ski in our 50s, quite old to start, and we loved it. The ski industry in eastern Australia is huge actually. All accommodation is booked is booked out months in advance.
Summer time in the Snowy Mountains is amazing too. To hike and picnic above the treeline is so beautiful, usually some snow in pockets left over from winter. Below in the treeline, the beautiful Snow Gums grow with their lovely coloured bark . Such a beautiful area!
Also, in the southern state of Victoria, there is a thriving ski industry as well.
It is quite common to meet Americans and Canadians who follow the snow from home, and work as "lifties" on the ski lifts.
We used to work cleaning windows in the resorts, before the season actually started. To go to work on a skidoo, and it was nothing to have to jam our ladder in a metre the snow to clean the outside, while my wife would clean inside. Loved it!

I am widowed now, 76 years old, and I enjoy your channel down here in Oz.
Regard, Merrick.

Here's a fun fact: the coldest temperature ever recorded in Australia was minus 27C at Charlotte Pass in the Snowy Mountains in 1994. Also in our winter, we have a larger area of snow than the Swiss Alps. We even have blizzards and snowstorms in the Alps in winter and the occasional avalanche.

I grew up in Cooma (the coldest town in mainland Australia)

You're nearly an Aussie now with that comment 'don't forget Tasmania', because I forgot we had that thing floating down there. 😁

Avid Aussie skier here. Absolutely love going down to the snowy mountains, it really is one of my favourite parts of the country and feels like a second home to me. On average, we have a peak snow base of about 160-180cm in mid winter above 1650m elevation. We actually get quite a consistent amount of snow at higher elevations. There's also 4 ski resorts in NSW (Perisher, Thredbo, Selwyn and Charlotte Pass), 5 in VIC (Buller, Hotham, Falls Creek, Lake Mountain and Baw Baw) and 2 in Tassie (Ben Lomond and Mt Mawson). There's technically 1 in the ACT as well (Corin Forest), but its very small.

I grew up in Jindabyne. My family moved up to rebuild the Perisher Centre after high winds tore the roof off and then stayed as part of the Ski Tube and Station Resort projects.
Can be bloody cold but have also been skiing in shorts and t-shirt. It can be in the 20's C one minute and below a few minutes later.
It's a great part of the country even in summer and it does get hot here!

Yeah that's about right.

Snows in the Victorian Alps, too.
Mt Buller, Mt Buffalo, Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Mt Stirling.
It even snows just North of Melbourne.

It can snow in the Blue Mountains which is only 70km from Sydney. Obviously not much snow, but it happens. I think a lot of folk forget we get cold here. Not Canada cold, but we arent always 35 degrees everyday. Come in spring or Autumn and travellers could be shocked that they still need jumpers.

I am 56 and have currently lived 85kms from Mt BawBaw Alpine resort for the past 6 years and have never been - might have to make it a bucket list for next winter

Congratulations on the great pronouncement of Mt Kosciuszko
