Tapered leaders or Home Made leaders..??
There is a right time to use both so I go over when you should ditch the shop bought ones and build your own.

Hi Alex, great explanation of basics and worth repeating. I learned to make my own flies when the price went up from 30 Cents to 50 Cents, in those days I.could loose 20 flies a day so I had to do something to learn to do better. I joined my local fishing club the AFAC here in Auckland and found the help I needed to learn about tying flies and changing my technique from chucking to casting lines. I love watching you and other good anglers explaining things so much better then any books ever could. Don’t stop, we need you!

Good explanation Alex. Always watch your Friday fillers and continue to glean something new to improve my catch rate. Thanks.

This is definitely one of THE BEST tips I have picked up from your vids Alex, it has made my fishing much more successful in bigger and deeper water. Not only to get flies down fast but it allows you to easily adjust the depth of your flies by siding the indicator (e.g. NZ Strike Indicator) up or down the whole length of the straight 2x-3x section for a range up to 9-10 feet 👍

Great video I wish someone explained that to me 25 years ago. I think the level leader also helps to slow the drift down when the current is fast near the top as the thin line can cut through the current a bit.

Thanks Alex, am a newbie to this and your tip about tapered leaders not sinking in slow waters rings hme here, have been sight fishing small, clear streams and had noted that the leader was sitting up and not sinking So today I bought some 3X and 4X (already have 5X & 6X) so the tapered leaders will go in the dark nether regions of the fishing bag. Love your work!

Great stuff man, Thanks for the advice! I think you should check your microphone though, there's a crackling like your mic isnt plugged correctly

Yup makes sense Alex, less drag equals a faster sink rate, sometimes I just use 5x all the way through from fly line to nymphs, like ya say just depends on the water ya fishing. What ever works to get those nymphs down fast bumping that fish on the nose....I think the best advice ya could give to ya subs is don't be afraid to experiment lines bud.

I think tapered leaders are a waste of time period. I use fluorocarbon for my leader and different tippet nymphing and dry fly fishing. Yeah tapered leader doesnt sink fast but once you bust it off past a certain point you're going to tie tippette to it anyways.
Either way your very knowledgeable and a great teacher. Tight lines friend!

The Alex Trippinontrout version of Euro-nymphing. Sort of. Leaving for Montana O Dark 30 in AM[1800 miles]. CHEERS!

Hi Alex
Can I ask what your thoughts are on tippet rings? Perhaps to join a tapered leader onto some tippet?
I’m not great at knots and lose flies like they’re cheap! I end up clipping tapered leaders back to 10x! So I commonly just use 1 line for my whole leader.
Cheers,

Would a fluorocarbon leader accomplish the same thing if I needed to get down deep fast. Mono floats so would fluorocarbon leaders be the thing to use? If so then why make my own? I can buy fluorocarbon leaders. I don’t understand.

Does the thin diameter leader cut into the fly line at all? It does so you have a work around?
