Humans are nothing like giraffes. These animals have very skimpy sleep needs – able to survive on a few naps here and there throughout the day, and then munching happily on leaves in the highest trees all night. Try that after your next all-nighter. You’d likely fall flat on your face from sheer exhaustion. Human beings need sleep because we’ve evolved a little differently.

Unlike the giraffe, humans need sleep for a few reasons. Though scientists still aren’t exactly certain why, we seem to require 7-9 hours to function with any composure. Here’s why:

- Sleep evolved as an adaptation. If we rest at night, we’re less likely to be vulnerable to prey. Though most of us don’t have to worry about being eaten by a lion by the light of the moon any more, there are other predators that lurk at night – like all night pancake houses serving really bad coffee, and night clubbers who tend to drink and drive. Tucked away in your bed, you’ve evolved to be safe.
- Sleeping reduces the energy demand on your body. Especially for the excitable among us, if we were “up” 24-7, the caloric expenditure that would be needed to sustain us would be rather ridiculous, so our bodies evolved to rest, and let our organs do other things, like eliminate environmental and metabolic toxins, and make new brain cells.
- Sleep gives us a much needed mental break. When we are awake, the brain produces hormones which contribute to exhaustion, including adenosine, a by-product of our brain cells’ activities. When we sleep we give the body a chance to clear out those hormones, and create a clean slate for the next day.

If you’re sleeping like a giraffe, your denying your body of its evolutionary directive to get some rest. Try a nap if you need to, but make sure you get at least 8 hours of sleep at night.
