Kastro Castle Leros Greece
The Castle of Leros also called Castle of the Virgin Mary or Castle of Panteli, was built in the 11th century by the Byzantine emperor Alexios Komninos. The castle was occupied by the Knights of Rhodes in the 13th century who reinforced it with more walls and turrets, and later in the 15th century it was taken over by the Turks. The inhabitants of Leros used it as a refuge from pirate raids. Today the Castle of Leros is still the main attraction of the island. It is located on Apittiki Hill above the towns of Agia Marina, Platanos and Panteli, with spectacular views across the island and the Aegean.
