Very informative. In my opinion as a country we should never have quit the gold standard.

In case anyone was wondering, the "karat" (and "carat" for diamonds) system dates back to the Romans. A "kerat" (a.k.a. "siliqua") was 1/24th of a "solidus" (that's where we get "solid gold" from). 10/14/18/22/24 aren't arbitrary, they were determined over the course of two millennia to be "acceptable for sale" in the jewelry market.
