You can run pretty much anything written for x86 (even 16-bit OSes) on a modern x86-64 machine natively because the architecture is designed to be reverse compatible.

The only issue is to make it boot, because old OSes can't comprehend USB and SATA drives.

6 years ago xp was still very common in the industry on deticated systems, for example for CNC-machines and cash dispensers.
Not sure how it is today.

I still remember, my first laptop was 1.4ghz single core and 512mb ram.
First boot after installation of windows xp was consuming 98mb of ram.

Retail point of sale system as well or retail systems in general still might run on old OS. Some retail merchants believe if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Around here a lot of ATMs also run on Win XP. For it's age it still works quite well.
