The Real Reason the Sky is Blue

If someone (say, a small child) asks you why the sky is blue, you might dive into an explanation of Rayleigh scattering. But if you want to give them a way cooler explanation, you can tell them it's because of bacteria.

Tired of living at the bottom of the ocean?

🎶 Now you can eat sunlight! 🎶

Using a revolutionary technique you can convert sunlight into food.

🎶 Taste the sun! 🎶

(Side effect: now there's oxygen everywhere and the sky is blue.)

I've always found it interesting how aerogel scatters light the same way the sky does. Any light it scatters make it look blue, but the moment you look at a light source thorough it it looks light orange.

I remember first learning about why the sky is blue from Carl Sagan's book Pale Blue Dot, one of my favourites.

Strangely enough I was pondering this just the other day. I was driving home the other day and noticed the smoke from nearby forest fires had changed the color of the sky to a orangish brownish gray. I realized the diffusion explanation I had learned as a kid was incomplete at best.

This explanation would certainly have the desired effect of making the 4-year-old go away.

Informative video. Learning about radiation and optics I was taught that Rayleigh scattering is why the sky is blue. Indeed, that is a key part of the story but the there are other factors behind the phenomenon, as touched upon by the video.
