Tuesday, July 5, 2022. Shortly after a heavy storm, the sky over South Dakota in the US was still overcast. Locals finally went outside and saw that the sky had an intense dark green hue, and they'd never seen anything like that before. People said that it looked like something straight up from science fiction or even a horror movie. So… What happened there? Was it caused by humans or by nature? Let's find out.

I live here and witnessed this in its entirety ...it was unreal ...this storm happened from 3-5 in the afternoon, sun was nowhere near the horizon....also, during those 2 hours, there were lightning flashes everywhere but you never saw the actual lightning nor did you ever hear any thunder cracking....just weird distant rumbling. For the record we are not used to these kind of storms here. I've lived here for over 50 years and have never seen a storm like this....even the wildlife was caught off guard and they normally sense storms arriving before they are even visible. I don't know what caused this bizarre, damaging event but I do know it felt unnatural.

I was 9 years old on June 8th 1966 in Topeka Kansas. Yet I remember everything that happened on that day.
We saw strange clouds and it was eerie how calm the winds were. The sky had a tint of green. I heard the Tornado sirens and the TV warnings.
I remember looking out our window towards the Southwest. I saw a huge wide tornado on Butnett's mound as I was heading to the Basement.
The F5 Tornado carved a 17 mile path through Topeka. It stayed on the ground. 17 people were killed and 500 were injured. At times the Tornado was a half mile wide. Thanks to our sirens, shelters and weather services more lives were not lost.
The Tornado hit our area almost immediately after I saw it. I heard a loud Roar and saw a red roof fly off from the basement window.
We had some minor damage. But less than a half mile away, everything was gone!
When you hear a Tornado warning. You might have less than a minute to take shelter!!!
Look up the Tri-State Tornadoe of 1925.
Get a NOAA automatic Alert Radio if you don't have one already! And set it for alerts in your area.

I have seen a green sky one time in Milwaukee WI. Turned into a massively intense storm. This must have been back in about 1985 ish. Was so wicked, I remember it so clear and I was only about 10.

My dad grew up in a very rural community and told me that when the sky becomes that dark pukish green color, it means that a tornado is coming, or a very bad thunderstorm. Pretty sure this has been known for quite some time.

Same thing happened when the EF5 hit Nashville in Jade green sky, purple hued lighting the sky, with what could only be presumed as lighting, but never witnessed the actual strike or heared the thunder, and a faint sound of a jet engine.... Was the most beautifully horrific sight I ever saw in my life

In 2003, one late summer afternoon in Memphis, a derecho storm attacked the city. Everything began with sudden intense winds, hail, thunder and lightning, green sky and all. The weather service sounded off tornado sirens, thinking that's what it was but it wasn't. The whole phenomenon lasted for hours, knocking out power to a million residents. It uprooted massive trees to fall wherever, in the streets, on cars, on houses and infrastructure. To this day, the locals call the storm Hurricane Elvis.

I saw this storm. It was extremely humid before the storm, then a huge black cloud came up, and the whole sky was dark in minutes. Lots of people actually went out on their porches and watched the beginning of the storm.

I experienced this in Cheyenne, Wyoming in the '80's. As soon as we saw that sky, we had an immediate sense of dread. Shortly after there was a terrible storm with tornados, hail, and floods. Twelve people were killed and 30 injured.

I live in that area! I saw the sky turn green! It was a different green than a tinge of green that is normal ... The funny thing is the next day a lot of people got flu-like symptoms.

That was no normal green-age! I wrote about this on another platform. I got some great response from others who lived in the area and the illness that followed. Not everyone got sick. Still trying to figure out why some did and some didn't.

This storm was insane! Took out so many of my windows. Look down the street completely black with hints of green, look the other way and it's clear as day. Just swept the street up out of nowhere. Still to this day we are still recovering from this event.

1:30 "This hurricane was terrible."

South Dakota doesn't have hurricanes. It was a thunderstorm, albeit a rather intense one.
Hurricanes only occur in the ocean.

We had a derecho August 10 2020 that came through my home town of Cedar Rapids Iowa and the storm stretched accross the state, we had very little warning, if it wasn't for my mom warning us we would have had no idea what was coming. The windspeed was recorded with the peek windspeed of 140-160 mph and the storm lasted for about an hour it was very very scary and I have never seen anything like it in my 50yrs on this planet .

I live in Ontario Canada and have been in the vicinity of at least 4 Tornado & EVERYTIME the sky was Green like the Emerald city in the Wizard of Oz. All the tornadoes were during the day not near sunrise or sunset, it got very dark first and then went green. I remember the movie Twister even mentions the green sky so why is this saying its unusual?? From what I understood the green colour was a sign the tornado was about to happen.

I've only seen a sky lile that once when I was very young. We knew storms were coming, but then we saw the clouds turn green and mom rushed us all to the basement. When the storm broke it became black as night even though it was sometime in the middle of the day. We stayed in that basement for what felt like eternity. Luckily the house stayed standing. Couldn't tell you how the rest of the area did.

I experienced a green sky here in Michigan in the 70’s and it ended up being a tornado. I lived in a mobile home then but I’m so glad I listened to my intuition and hid in the bathtub. I survived. 😉

I live in Iowa and was there when the derecho came through. The highest winds recorded was downtown at 145mph. Trees and light polls were ripped out of the ground and thrown around, some landing in homes, through the roof/walls. In Cedar Rapids, we didn't have cell phone service for three days, no power for 2-4weeks and no internet for longer. Some people died because the ambulance couldn't get to them. Almost all roads were blocked from fallen trees. We lost 60-75% of our tree line.
