Ancient DNA Found in 6 Million Year Old Turtle Fossil

Traces of ancient DNA were found in a 6 million year old fossilized turtle shell discovered in Panama, suggesting genetic material can survive much longer than thought. The extinct species of Lepidochelys turtle bones contained cell structures resembling nuclei which tested positive for DNA. If confirmed by sequencing, it would be the oldest DNA ever recovered. Understanding the genetics of this primitive turtle could reveal clues about evolution, especially since modern sea turtles face extinction threats.
