The first time i tried cushion tires was because it has an insanely high invincibility stat and I thought it must be good. Then I played one of the most tilting sessions of my life where I kept making mistakes!! Turns out I was not doing anything wrong, I just didn't realize the cushion tires have different physics and that was messing me up.

It's so frustrating how vague and partly hidden the kart stats are throughout the Mario kart series. Either the game needs to be simpler or they need more descriptions

It's another one of those things where they aren't bad, you just aren't using them properly. You're using them like their roller wheels, but if you anticipate the turn you can make drifts easier. Like in Coconut Mall, I would skip the trick on the escalator and immediately start the drift for the upcoming turn so I could cut it inside more and get an ultra.
