My mother was a union president for nurses. She helped save a lot of jobs of nurses who were going to get fired simply because they made "too much" money or accrued "too many" benefits. The hospitals would often try to fire tenured nurses so they could hire one's right out of school for almost half the price. The union prevented companies from being able to do that.
