How To Design a Custom Home from Scratch

I'll be showing you step-by-step how to design a house from scratch. I'll cover everything in detail including completing a land survey for your vacant lot, sketching out exterior and interior design concepts with your architect, creating interior layouts, drafting final drawings with your architect that will be sent to a structural engineer for review, and finally picking all the finishes through the house like flooring and countertops. I'm using my new construction home in Lake Tahoe California as an example as I explain each step in the home design process. The exterior design of my house in Tahoe is a modern cabin. The interior layout design for the first floor is based around an open floor plan for the main living space that lends itself to indoor/outdoor living, while the second floor layout includes all 3 bedrooms with a private deck off the primary bedroom. I include a lot of tips that I've learned throughout my own home design process like how to save money on certain design choices.

Great vid and thank you!
May I ask What was your submittal process to the city planning and permitting office? I thought the planning office only approved “wet set” drawings from Aia listed architect

Great cabin! I’ve been going through your videos on the build and really like your style. My wife and I are in the process of designing a similar house that we will start next year. Would you be willing to share your floor plan?

I want to custom design my own home based upon my interests and life style. I want exterior doors to be 3'-6", interior doors 3', working shutters, mitered corner windows, clerestory wibdows, et cetera. And incorporate the home with nature.

Im happy for you and your house but the title is a little misleading.

No offense, but I would bet money that this design was done by a designer/draftsperson and not an actual architect. I mention this because a person is required to complete a lot more education and working experience—not to mention a rigorous licensing process—before they can rightfully be called an architect. There’s nothing wrong with using a designer instead of an architect if that meets your budget and design requirements, but the difference in the process and end result can be substantial as evidenced by your design. Again, no offense intended; if you are happy with the finished product, that’s all that really matters. Just be accurate with your terminology, please. Thank you for the opportunity to comment. Enjoy your home!
