Jess speaking:
It's really easy to dismiss ADHD as "Not that big a deal", because the things that people with ADHD struggle with, are things that everyone struggles with sometimes.

"Everyone gets distracted", "Everyone loses things", "Everyone forgets things".

While yes, these are things that everyone struggles with, not everyone struggles with it to the degree and the frequency that those with ADHD struggle with it

For us, it is a big deal.

While it might not be a big deal to occasionally lose something, when you lose something everyday, several times a day, it does become a big deal.

It starts to really interfere with your life.

The "ADHD isn't a big deal"/"everybody gets distracted, forgets things, etc." is why I wasn't diagnosed with ADHD-PI until age 22... and then proceeded to continue to struggle because I treated it with medication alone and assumed it was just about "paying attention." It wasn't really until THIS YEAR, at 36 years of age, that I started to educate myself and realize how much of my daily struggles are from ADHD. Now thanks to communities like this, I'm finally learning how to manage my symptoms and (much more difficult) accept and stop blaming myself.

It's an even bigger deal, when it becomes a volume amplifier for other mental issues we might be experiencing.

The more I learn about ADHD the more I realize it affects almost every part of my life

For me, the hardest part is the missed appointments, meetings, and deadlines. I did the calculation last week, and discovered that I have spent over $3, 000 just this year due to these issues. I missed 2 deadlines to graduate (meaning I had to pay for 2 extra semesters), parking tickets because I forgot about my car, expired license plates, and 3 missed doctor's appointments. Not to mention letting people down every week because of missed meetings. It's heartbreaking.

And the “really interfering with your life” part is the DSM-5 criteria for ADHD counting as a **disorder!**

My pet turtle ran away. This was kind of the breaking point for me because I just straight up forgot that I got him out and went to do something else. Everyone forgets things yes but not everyone forgets about the big things constantly.

One positive I see ftom my ADHD is that I'm very patient and understanding towards other people's forgetfulness or being distracted. So it's more like I see some ADHD traits in everyone and empathize rather than "everyone has a little adhd"

I am frequently late to work or church or social gatherings because I lost something I needed. It's a big problem!!

The difference between ADHD and a "normal" life is that those little things (being distracted, losing something, being intensively emotional) can and will interfere with our life. And that's why ADHD needs to be recognized as a disorder and should be treated properly

I'm really grateful for your channel! I've have ADHD since 1997 but my parents never seeked treatment for me. Thought "trying harder" was enough. During the pandemic I realized how debilitating ADHD really is. Sucks I'm almost 30 and I'm just getting started on trying to fix my life. I feel like I missed out on so much. But your channel has helped me find the treatment I needed. Thank you!

An analogy I think about almost every day is one I forgot where I heard
“Everyone has glitches in their executive function sometimes but the difference is whether it’s a minor glitch that doesn’t affect your daily life or an ongoing virus that destroys your computer”

(And because I love analogies I’ll also leave one I heard on this channel
“It’s like adhd is a light switch and everyone else is a dimmer switch. A neurotypical person can fine tune where their attention is while with adhd you can be on level zero or level eleven. Same goes for emotional regulation.”

And one my friend found on Reddit
“Autism is like you’re in a play and everyone has the script but you.”)

GOD I get this so much with anxiety. “Everyone gets anxious, ” yes, but not everyone gets anxious to the point that they can’t function, about things that shouldn’t even really be a big deal. It’s crazy that people don’t realize someone can experience the same thing they do but worse, and more often.

You know what terrible? Being an ADHD patient and having people tell you "Just focus" or "you're just lazy"...
It hurts and it dismisses...

I have to budget for takeout because my ADHD makes cooking and cleaning with each meal a four hour endeavor... and it's one of the worst things to explain to people.

Considering how much my life was ruined by ADHD and the depths of misery and despair it caused me, i can understand the frustration of hearing such things as "ADHD is not a big deal".

I've literally lost things that were important to me to the point that I told my fiance I didn't want an engagement ring because I'm just going to lose it. It is not normal to lose things at the frequency at which I do.

When you keep losing jobs bc you accidentally forget things and overbook yourself or just get terribly overwhelmed with seemingly simple stuff, or when you feel like a failure as an adult bc you’ve been working on your degree for 6 years? Yeah. It’s a big deal .
Love your channel ❤
