Surrender was not an option for Second Lieutenant Hiroo Honoda, who was sent to the island of Lubang in the Philippines on December 26, 1944. His commander, Major Yoshimi Taniguchi, gave him orders to do anything in his power to hinder enemy attacks on the island, and that under no circumstances should he surrender or commit suicide.

Onoda had three soldiers under his command, of whom one surrendered, and the other two were killed. He remained alone in the mountains for 29 years, stealing food to survive.

With cap and sword, in good condition, he only surrendered after receiving direct orders from his former commander, Major Yoshimi Taniguchi, in 1974.

He was received as a hero in Japan and received all back pay.

After his definite departure from the Army, Lieutenant Onoda moved to Brazil, where he became a cattle rancher in Terenos, Mato Grosso do Sul. He died in 2014, and his relatives still live in Brazil.

Respect. A soldier is a soldier, regardless of the uniform.

I respect his bravery and loyalty of this Japanese Imperial Army...but I loathe their cruelty and abuses they committed while in the Philippines and other Asian countries...

It's an incredible story. I commend his loyalty, and integrity.
Though he represented a fierce, and ugly regime, he served more than his due.
Cannot blame him for not knowing the war was over. I respect him for remaining true to his country. At any given time he could have said the heck with this and simply walked away, but stayed faithful not just to his country, his commanding officer, and flag. He stayed true to himself. All of that gets the utmost respect from me.

Absolute loyalty is a rare commodity these days. I never like the Japanese soldiers, but I salute to Hiroo Onoda.

It only truly shows that Banana and Coconut and fish is the best for healthy and long life. These are the main staple food of which 2nd Lt. Hiroo Onoda survived for 29 years in the jungle of Lubang Island near Mindoro for 29 years k!

He also didn’t know the war had ended and kept fighting until the 70s because he could stop or he would be charged with hundreds of war crimes.

see how when your country needs you then you must be there, but when you need your country they dont care so much, they only found him 30 years later by the single and only man who cared enough to actually go there and put some effort into finding him
thats sad, very sad !

You wont find a single German with 1/10000 the guts of a typical Imperial Japanese soldier.
