When someone starts arguing against 'materialism' you know they are full of it from the get go. A modern scientist might classify themselves as a physicalist which is a much broader and deeper concept. Describing science as materialism is subtly implying it is stuck in some simplistic 19th century view of reality, it's essentially straw manning.
