Is a 2017 iMac Still Good?

Can a 2017 iMac still be good for daily use in 2024? Is iMac 2017 even worth it effort wise to get up and running? Can the HDD be upgraded to SSD without having to open the computer and split the Apple OEM Adhesive binding the screen to it's housing? In this video I will answer these questions by demonstration of a real life working example and show you the before and after result of upgrading this beautiful Apple iMac 2017. This video will also feature an easy SSD Upgrade solution that can be applied to this and any Apple Computer.

This is an updated remake of my original video which did well here on YouTube.

I thought I would re-edit the original footage of this video to create an updated version so that I could not only practice my video editing skills, but also perfect this original Upgrade/Review Tutorial.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. After a visit to the Genius Bar with NO successful solution and considering trading in my 2019, iMac for a new version, I am now using my iMac. Your directions (along with others) were extremely helpful in getting it to run. It's faster than ever. And I was able download the newest operating system and transfer all my files. Thank you again. I have the exactly same iMac, it was my main machine for long time, now I have a MacBook Pro and this beautiful machine is for my kids. Unfortunately recently OS updates make it very slow, and some times it freezes on the loading screen. I’m getting the OWC upgrading kit replace the HDD with a 1TB SSD, and also upgrading to 32GB, hopefully this is enough to keep using it more years

I'm still using my 2016 27" imac and i love it. Its running OS Ventura which I think is the highest I can install. I want to point out one thing i learned recently. If you use Adobe apps (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) they wont install unless the hard drive is formatted Mac OS extended.

Picked up one of these the 4K model i5 3.0Ghz 16GB RAM and the 256SSD internal for $188 with a one year warranty. I ordered a 1TB Thunderbolt SSD too, so I maximize my storage and speed potential.

I got mine 27'' 2017, with i7700k - 4.2Ghz, Radeon Pro 580, and Apple SSD for $685 recently.
No complains! OS gets ready in 5 seconds and I can play Cyberpunk in Bootcamp on medium in 2k 😁

Thank you for the insight. I have a 2013, I just ordered the SSD drive you recommended and hopefully will get the results you have shown in the video. However, I am an 83 year old non-techie (and I'm left handed). Hopefully you have a vid re: hooking up the hard drive. I.e.: I plug the hard drive in then what? Thanks

This is 2015 iMac IMO. 2017 has 2400mhz ram, not 2133.
EDIT: ok, it has 2 thunderbolts so 2017. so what - Apple placed 8gb of 2133 even that system is capable of 2400? I’m confused 😏 week ago I upgraded ram in 21.5 2017 to 32gb ram (~50$) and sata SSD (~50$). It was fusion drive so it has pcie drive bay, but you need specific adapter to use nvme. Cool Mac :)

It can be bought on eBay for $100. If you want to give your kid their first computer, this is it. This and an iPhone SE 1st Gen 16GB for $50. Give them the bare minimum so they aren't addicted, and their childhood will be much better.

your video made me order this machine for $230 USD all in..will do what you did here..i was having a 2009 iMac on HDD upgrading to a 512gig SSD + thermal.cable was costing me $90..so changed my mind and bought this instead and now will try and sell the 2009 one for $120-$150USD lol.

Help me with any questions in future..also please share steps how to boot it from external SSD the setup and steps for it pls

Is running it through an external a better soulution because the OWC upgrade I hear horror stories of the adhesive not working, I just got the same mac just given to me and I upgraded it to Sonoma with 64 gigs of ram,
